Jamey Berg 10/24/2018 10:18 AMThis has been a great challenge for me. It has motivated me to do some things that I have been meaning to do, helped me focus on some healthy activities and provided some useful information about our environment and how we need to engage with it in a more positive way. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Know My healthHow do you deal with the physical and emotional stress of the big problems we face? How can you help others cope?
Jamey Berg 10/24/2018 10:13 AMHow do you deal with the physical and emotional stress of the big problems we face? How can you help others cope? Channeling the stressful/negative energy into something neutral or positive (if possible) is my primary coping mechanism. Exercise, hobbies or doing something nice for others are ways that provide some positive feedback for me and to help overcome stress. -
Jamey Berg 10/23/2018 1:25 PMI went back through the challenges and found a couple things I missed on the first pass. There are some great actions in the challenge to help us inform ourselves about what's going on locally around us. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Support Pollution ReductionWhat environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?
Jamey Berg 10/23/2018 1:21 PMWhat environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it? I mainly looked at air quality. The Air Quality Index (AQI) is a good way to inform yourself about what kind of outdoor activities are appropriate. The AQI takes into account ground-level ozone, particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide to give you a general idea of if you may be impacted. Bad air quality can affect everyone in the more severe cases, but is especially important to people with asthma or who have a sensitivity to the pollutants listed above. The big take away is not to go outside and exercise heavily on days where the AQI is showing harmful conditions. I've been told DEQ has an app. that can be downloaded to track this information on your phone.

Jamey Berg 10/20/2018 10:57 AMFound a good urban foraging book by John Kallas for Oregon. Sounds like a good one to get me going. Thinking of buying it. If anyone has other recommendations, I'd love to hear them. -
Jamey Berg 10/20/2018 10:18 AMUsed the Thelma Sanders squash I got from my CSA to make potato pancakes last night. My kids went nuts for them. They couldn't believe that squash could taste that good. -
Jamey Berg 10/18/2018 4:09 PMTonight I'm looking forward to learning about foraging for food locally. -
Jamey Berg 10/17/2018 11:46 AMIt's a beautiful day out there. I'm looking forward to getting some exercise with co-workers over lunch. -
Jamey Berg 10/15/2018 7:39 AMThe challenge gives me a positive outlet for some of the negative energy I take in throughout the day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Try a New Way to PrepCanning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?
Jamey Berg 10/15/2018 7:37 AMWhat are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year? I'm planning on making some kraut with the last of my CSA bounty.
