Create Your Own Action
Storm Water-Project Salmon Safe
We are the First Community College in the nation to be Salmon Safe Certified. Our first phase has started and when completed, we will be saving 2million gallons of runoff, from our parking lots, from going directly into the creeks, streams, and rivers. I have been part of this project from the start and now it's becoming reality.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 5 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Launch a Recycling Program
I will start a recycling program at my workplace or school. If a recycling program exists, I will advocate for ways to improve and expand it.
Simplicity
Work-Life Balance
I will not work more than 8 hour days each day to practice work-life balance.
Simplicity
De-Clutter My Home
I will de-clutter, clean, and donate or recycle unneeded items in my home.
Energy
Upgrade My Windows
I will upgrade the windows or weatherstripping in my home or office to reduce air leaks and save on energy costs.
Simplicity
Have a Garage Sale
I will have a group garage sale with friends, family, and/or neighbors.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Troy Builta 10/24/2018 7:18 AMThank you, to everyone that participated in this astounding EcoChallenge! I'm sure this one will go down as one of the biggest challenges, with the most participants ever!
I hope that we contributed to the numbers, I hope that most of you were trying to beat the two time champions, the Sustainable Saints! Either way, we should all be proud of the impact that we made...even if your team didn't win!

Troy Builta 10/24/2018 7:12 AMThis challenge has helped me curve the straw! I am refusing straws every day! only twice did I fail, and once was going to the movies with my son...they don't have an alternative and I didn't bring ours. the other was a fast food run that I forgot to stop the straws. We didn't use them and they didn't go into the garbage, just sitting in my plastic recycling waiting to go where they will get reused one way or another. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? Do you know how your compost will be used and the benefits it has on the environment?
Troy Builta 10/22/2018 7:33 AMI notice that we throw away a lot more than we should. I am trying to not buy more produce than we can use. But, I do know that what that the compost that is created from our waste is used and the benefits are better on the environment then tossing it in the trash. I'm trying to reduce our trash load going out every two week also. some weeks are great, while others are not. Something to work on for sure. -
Troy Builta 10/17/2018 3:26 PMI really enjoy seeing so many people coming together to make a difference. Now, if we can get the other 7.7 billion people to do the same. -
Troy Builta 10/16/2018 7:07 AMGreat EcoChallenge this year! Some amazing teams making for an even bigger impact! Way to go everyone. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Troy Builta 10/15/2018 7:20 AMI do as much as I can. But, having yard sales or donating my things I don't use any longer has been huge. I try and repair and reuse what I can. Also, if I can, repurpose it. I recycle as much as I possibly can as well. I admit, I hate when I have to throw it out in to the waste bin. The first thing I think of is, where will this end up? If we all did that, I think we wouldn't have so much going to the landfills. -
Troy Builta 10/08/2018 7:43 AMNot even through the first week and we have already past last years total participants! In 2017 there was over 12,000, we are already over 13,000! I can't wait to see the total impact! Keep it up! -
Troy Builta 10/03/2018 12:26 PMIt's good to see so many teams with so many members on here this year. In some way or another, I hope that we sparked that fire. I hope that you feel the need to win, and recruit more. Remember, we haven't even started yet and every year we come from behind and take this. So do what you can to keep us at bay, but know that we are right there waiting to take it again!
So, GOOD LUCK!
Muuhahahaha...that was my evil laugh! -
Troy Builta 9/26/2018 8:28 AMKeep it up everyone! wow, all the new people this year, and we haven't even started yet! I think this will be a great, yet tuff competition this year. I see people coming up from behind, and Yes Magazine! What a great start! Good luck to everyone, and the best part of this is, we all WIN!!! -
Troy Builta 9/21/2018 9:02 AMWhen going for a walk, take a garbage bag with you and pick garbage up along the way. You feel good, both physically and mentally, for a job well done!
