Jordan's actions
Simplicity
Limit Social Media
I will limit my social media use to once each day reducing my daily use by 10 minute(s)
Health
Know My health
I will get my Core Four Biometrics tests (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and BMI).
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Food
Plant an Herb Garden
I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Health
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by opting into paperless billing and ending unwanted subscriptions.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Health
Take Control
Both system and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 10 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, their causes, and local initiatives to address these concerns.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Take ControlHow do environmental health, community health, and your personal health intersect?
Jordan C 10/24/2018 10:22 AMA healthy environment helps reduce pollutants, which allows me to improve and maintain my personal health. A healthy community means people to participate in sports and outdoor activities with, which is another way I can improve and maintain my personal health. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn About Local Environmental Justice ConcernsWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Jordan C 10/24/2018 10:20 AMI learned that I-70 through Denver is being widened and moved from a viaduct to the ground. Local neighborhoods, supported by the Sierra Club, are putting forth arguments against the project. The primary argument is that widening the highway will worsen environmental, health and social impacts disproportionately for low-income households in the area, especially for Latina families. -
Jordan C 10/24/2018 10:09 AMGlad to have participated in this fun challenge! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Jordan C 10/24/2018 10:08 AMIt is difficult to understand the impacts of our purchases, because we do not see all the waste and impacts generated along the way from manufacturing, to packaging to transport. We can also dispose of trash regularly throughout the day, distorting our sense of how much waste we generate. Carrying my trash around helped me realize that I don't generate too much trash, but it did help me see how much trash can accumulate even over the course of a day.-
Meghan Jones 10/24/2018 11:06 AMVery cool that you completed that challenge! Thanks for sharing what you learned. -
Josh Gipper 10/24/2018 10:16 AMWe've come a long way in the past 150 years in how we manage trash. To the point now where we don't recognize how much we accumulate.

REFLECTION QUESTION

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Jordan C 10/24/2018 10:06 AMIt feels good to know that I will be receiving less paper mail and reducing my waste. For my next step, I will continue to work on how much of my waste I compost! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Try a New Way to PrepCanning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?
Jordan C 10/24/2018 9:55 AMI would like to pickle daikon, a type of radish, as I always enjoy it at a local Korean BBQ restaurant. I'd also like to try pickling something sweet, like apples. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Plant an Herb GardenConsider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?
Jordan C 10/24/2018 9:53 AMLiving in an apartment, a small counter herb and plant garden was the best option for me. I kept the plants in individual containers so that I can move them around based on how much light they seem to need. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Jordan C 10/19/2018 11:18 AMI could incorporate the "Rs" into my life by refusing additional packaging (e.g. extra bag, plastic silverware) when ordering food to go and by reusing to-go containers as Tupperware. -
Jordan C 10/19/2018 11:11 AMThis challenge has created healthy competition in the Boulder office!-
