Consider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?

Over the years, I've had the best luck in growing in containers.  Tucson is a harsh environment for growing edibles, between the relentless summer heat and the critters that visit my yard, it's hard to grow anything to maturity.  Herbs have been my best crops - basil, parsley, dill and one year, peppers!

Herbs are a favorite for me as well since the critters in Denver tend to leave those alone. Last year I lost all my tomatoes to squirrels and this year I lost all of my plums to raccoons. Gardening is bitter sweet at times.
