    Waste Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? Do you know how your compost will be used and the benefits it has on the environment?

When I started composting 28 years ago, I was surprised at how much can be composted (and recycled) leaving a relatively small amount to go to the landfill.  The compost supplied us with rich soil for the next planting season.

Why is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?

I always try to pick groceries with minimal amounts of packaging.  I rarely pick styrofoam containers and buy in bulk when possible. It is too easy to get rid of waste by putting it at the curb so people don't think much of it.  If it was a hefty price, we might think more about how much waste we are producing.  In other countries, they throw garbage in the streets and in waterways.

    Waste Choose Two-Sided Printing
Choosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?

Our department usually prints double sided, but we could do more to encourage everyone to do it.  I also use small margins and that saves paper too.

How might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems differently?

Plastic is a big issue, especially single use plastic; it is ubiquitous. We need to be creative about ways to minimize plastic but more importantly, can we make plastic out of more biodegradable starting material, so that it is less harmful to the land and oceans?

I am a big user of Amazon as are millions of other people, but it seems we have created an unintended consequence, which is the waste.  I wish Amazon had a way to reuse the boxes for another shipment. And they should put small items in small boxes or envelopes.  I repurpose my boxes, but most people probably don't, and many people don't even recycle the corrugated cardboard.  The mentality of shopping with the click of a button worries me that we are creating a lot of waste!
  • Reflection Question
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?

I started using reusable bags 25 years ago. It took me nearly 5 years to get into the habit of grabbing bags from my car each time I shop. I almost always bring a bag, but in the rare occasion that I don't, I ask for a paper bag and I carry as much of it as I can.

I am minimizing single use plastic, but I have to prepare better to completely eliminate it.

    Food Locally-Sourced Meals
If you were to only eat what is in season locally, what would be the hardest for you to give up?

Most of the food I eat for 3/4 of the year is sourced locally since I belong to a CSA and I have a garden. However, I would really miss avocado and pineapple.
