Mara's actions
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 10 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 60 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Health
Avoid refined sugar
I will adopt a diet free of refined sugars, which eliminates sweetened beverages, candy, and processed foods.
Community
Meet My Neighbors
I will meet 2 new neighbor(s) each day.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 2 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Energy
Heat and Cool Naturally
I will naturally heat and cool my house, office, or dorm room by opening or closing my windows, curtains, and blinds, and by using fans.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Meet My NeighborsIn what ways can you create more real, face-to-face interactions with friends — or strangers — each week?
Mara Cige 10/15/2018 6:32 AMI seem to meet new neighbors when I take my dog for a walk at different times of day. I am inconsistent with walking, especially with this wacky weather lately, but that allows me to catch people at different parts of their routine. Just yesterday I saw 2 new neighbors and learned they too had a dog. My neighborhood is also home to a few autistic and deaf children, so I feel it is important to know where they live in case of an emergency. My favorite neighbors so far are an elderly couple named Florence and Bert, they like to give my dog treats when we walk by!-
Nicole Kozlowski 10/23/2018 5:51 AMFlorence & Bert <3 I think they're my favorite neighbors too! The elderly neighbors are always the best. My favorite neighbor is an 84 year old woman names Phyllis. She and I drink gin and sodas on her porch all summer long. She also has kind of made me her adopted granddaughter which I'm totally cool with! Tasty baked goodies on the reg :-D

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Avoid refined sugarBefore you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?
Mara Cige 10/04/2018 10:59 AMI love chocolate! Everyone who knows me knows that. But I have been trying replace refined sugars in my diet to natural sugars from fruits and other healthier sources. At first I felt tired without that excess sugar, but as time goes on I have felt more energy because I am also eating a more balanced diet and adding proteins.-
Louisa Lubiak 10/04/2018 5:58 PMMara, I am a carboholic too and always looking for new ways to tame the sugar beast. Keep posting on your progress!
