Reflection QuestionWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Daniel Clarizio 10/24/2018 6:49 PMThat particular hazardous materials have specific centers where they should be disposed of. I also learned of how out of the way and difficult it is for many rural communities to properly recycle items they can't get rid of in their regular recycles. -
Daniel Clarizio 10/17/2018 2:11 PMRegarding Milwaukee, the most pressing issue, is the matter of pollution. Be it from the air quality, or Lake Michigan. We cannot continue to live unsustainably if we wish to continue our lives there. -
Reflection QuestionTransportation Improve a Bus StopHow can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?
Daniel Clarizio 10/17/2018 1:47 PMI can contact local leaders to see what can be done to maximize the bus routes in picking people up while simultaneously saving fuel. I can also advocate for the use of subways and trains for long distance shipping/travel instead of by airplane to help cut down on carbon emission. -
Reflection QuestionTransportation Car ShareTake a moment to think of places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
Daniel Clarizio 10/16/2018 2:11 PMWhen going downtown or to a grocery store, I always my friends if they plan on going to the store in the near future. If so, I advise we go as a group and take one vehicle to not only save gas, but the amount of travel done in car by each person. -
Reflection QuestionHealth Support Pollution ReductionWhat environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?
Daniel Clarizio 10/16/2018 2:05 PMIn the La Crosse city, accessibility to healthy foods has been a major focus as of late. Historically, low income households have had a harder time purchasing healthy foods due to distance, income, or time restraints. Thankfully there are new and effective ways these people can reach and consume healthy, organic food. -
Reflection QuestionSimplicity Needs Vs. WantsHow is creativity necessary for practicing simplicity?
Daniel Clarizio 10/16/2018 1:55 PMBy being creative, we can further simplify our lives. Whether it be through DIY projects that can help us save money, save time, or reduce waste, or through creating art to convey a positive emotion about returning to a more natural experience outside of typical human activity. -
Reflection QuestionNature Do Nature ActivitiesWhat did you observe while spending time outside -- through sight, sound, smell and touch?
Daniel Clarizio 10/16/2018 1:53 PMWhile walking outside, the scent of leaves was quite overwhelming. I could see the many rambunctious squirrels carrying out their daily tasks and climbing trees as frantic as students who were late to their classes. I appreciate the small things that I sometimes overlook in my general day to day. -
Reflection QuestionWater 5-Minute ShowersFive minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?
Daniel Clarizio 10/16/2018 1:50 PMI can further reduce my water footprint by being conscious about flushing the toilet unnecessarily, not fully turning the water off, or using water that I didn't actually need and end up pouring out. -
Reflection QuestionSimplicity Go for a Daily WalkFresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?
Daniel Clarizio 10/09/2018 6:40 AMTaking a walk each day gives me time to not focus on the many things I normally worry about. I learned to relax while simultaneously learning how to take a step back from my problems and tasks and approach them with new eyes, focus, and vigor. -
Reflection QuestionNature Spend Time OutsideRachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?
Daniel Clarizio 10/08/2018 3:51 PMIt's true for me, in that I feel more true to being a living being in the world while immersed in the beauty and mysteries of the natural world.
Spending most of your time indoors rather than outside can be quite obvious when talking about the importance of conserving and caring for our planet. Somebody who spends very little time outside would have less of an appreciation for the natural world than somebody who is outside and active in their surroundings.
