REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Cynthia Clements 10/24/2018 2:12 PMI think leading by example is always a great way to help those around you think about their own habits and realize they to can make changes easily. I'm not a huge meat eater in general (I don't crave it like some people), but I find that I eat it because it's just always around (BBQs, etc.) This goal allows me to stop and think before I eat and realize that often I don't really even want the animal products that are readily available. Shifting my habit to meat once per day (or not at all) has easily rubbed off on my partner (who can't live without meat), and has created opportunity for conversation with my parents. People might not always follow suit, but at least you had the opportunity to explain why eating less meat or no meat is important. Maybe they'll skip bacon next time they're ordering, you never know! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Advocate For More Food Packaging OptionsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Cynthia Clements 10/15/2018 1:31 PMI have chatted with my local Trader Joe's and New Seasons and asked for an alternative to single use plastics. I've also sent messages to these companies via their websites so that the people up the chain know it's an issue. More specifically, my New Seasons is not yet working with Go Box, which would be a great solution when ordering from the deli. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn More about Food DesertsWhat are the implications of access to nutritious food for a community?
Cynthia Clements 10/09/2018 7:24 PMDuring my food desert research I learned that Portland (and other hip cities) have a "food mirage" problem. This means that although neighborhoods may have access to fresh fruits and vegetables physically (within one mile of their home) they may not be able to afford it due to the increase of expensive stores like Whole Foods and New Seasons. From a community standpoint, it is important to make sure farmers markets are available to lower income communities on a regular basis if they live in a food desert or "food mirage" so they can access affordable produce. I'm going to further my research and figure out what kind of volunteer support I can provide to farmers markets to ensure fresh fruits and vegetables are reaching those communities in need.-
Dana Bannister 10/10/2018 7:09 AMme too! I've been thinking about volunteering at my Farmer's Market. Let me know what else you find out! DB :)
