Aaron's actions
Transportation
Go by Bike
I will commute by bike 5 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to 5.68 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Waste
Use a Reusable Water Bottle
I will keep 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) from entering the waste stream by using a reusable water bottle.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.

Aaron Cohen 10/24/2018 1:57 PMOverall, the challenge helped me be more mindful of my ecological footprint. I made some lifestyle changes that I will continue to do post-challenge and am grateful. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersFive minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?
Aaron Cohen 10/05/2018 11:28 AMThe next step would be to alternate between 2.5 minute and 5 minute showers each day. In the future, I would like to look into grey water management to conserve and reuse water. -
Aaron Cohen 10/04/2018 7:28 PMSo far, so good! I've been a bit lazy the last days, and setting a 5 mile goal on bike has helped me get out of the house, be active, and be more productive. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?
Aaron Cohen 10/03/2018 1:12 PMI think it's not just about water bottles, as many other beverages come in single-use bottles that are not mixed-materials and are not recyclable. The habit itself is tied to convenience and is indicative of a lifestyle which may not be as healthy or well planned out as it could be. Because I bike everywhere, I always have my backpack with me, and within the backpack is always my Nalgene bottle. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Aaron Cohen 10/03/2018 1:10 PMI like the repurpose idea the best, as I really don't like buying "stuff" if I can help it. For example, instead of buying my cat a bed for my little one to sleep in, I had a soft robe that I wasn't using much anymore and laid that out on the couch. Now, she sleeps on it all the time and I like to wrap her up in it like a taco. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Aaron Cohen 10/03/2018 1:01 PMToday I ate my second helping of leftovers: garbanzo beans, rice, a pile of veggies, and some grated cheese on top. It's so much easier to cook vegetarian and keep eating portions in the future. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go by BikeHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Aaron Cohen 10/03/2018 12:53 PMI feel very free and balanced when I ride my bike, and the world slows down for me. However, I prefer walking the most, but my town is not so safe in this regard.
