CYNTHIA's actions

Simplicity

Buy Used Clothes

I will spend 30 minutes learning about the perils of fast fashion and will buy my clothes at second-hand stores when I shop.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Plant an Herb Garden

I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

COMPLETED 12
DAILY ACTIONS

Waste

Use a Reusable Mug

I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill each day by using a reusable mug.

COMPLETED 12
DAILY ACTIONS

Create Your Own Action

Do not use any disposable plates or silverware.

At work it's very easy to just grab a paper plate or plastic tableware to eat with. Using a washable plate and utensils will cut my waste production .

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Buy Used Clothes
Do people with economic privilege have a responsibility to consume and own less? How can the concept of "reduce" be presented to those who may be struggling to have enough food, clothes, shelter?

As I prepare for retirement the stops that I make to the local thrift store, to drop off donations, has increased.  We also have a local group that collects clothing and home items for those who are in need, due to personal tragedy (fire, etc.) or financial challenges.  I always feel a mood boost after sharing my "gently used items" with these groups.

It has been my experience that those with greater wealth are not as compassionate on a day-to-day basis as middle class.  They cannot identify with life's challenges that those less fortunate face everyday.  A sad state of affairs in America.

I have my supply of paper straws handy but find it just as easy to totally skip any kind of straw.

I planted cilantro, parsley and dill in a counter top garden box.  We'll see if they germinate in the next week or so AND if I can keep them alive.  :-)

I brought in a tall mug from home to use instead of the paper cups supplied by my company.  Of course this means more dishes to wash but less waste in the landfill!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

When I HAVE TO use a straw it will be a paper, biodegradable one.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Plant an Herb Garden
Consider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?

I always plant herbs outside, in the summer, but will plant an herb garden in my kitchen this winter.

I love greenhouse gardening!  Ultimate goal is to have a large greenhouse for extending our somewhat short growing season in maine.
