Can organic farming feed the world? Which side of the argument do you fall on? Why?

Yes, but it will be tough and cost prohibitive for many. I can see this not being practical for poorer regions who need a high yield of crops at the lowest price possible.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?

Consumers should consider using a reusable water bottle, and I think this is a trend that is catching on. I remember when bottled water was quite expensive - now you can purchase a 24-pack for just a few dollars, which tells me that demand for this type of product is wavering.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?

Eating meat is a bit of an American tradition. I think our varied landscape and climates make it easy to raise beef, pork, chicken and other meat, not to mention the subsidies provided to ranchers by the federal government. I believe our meat-eating culture will be one that's tough to change, but I do see a shift toward consumers purchasing more organically and thoughtfully raised meat and more of these options are showing up in our grocery stores.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Find Local Recycling Depots
Our ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

I had a ton of styrofoam from a furniture order that I placed online. I learned that there is a recycling program in Tigard that accepts styrofoam packaging. I also heard that Ikea in Portland has a bin that accepts styrofoam, though I haven't confirmed this.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Whole Foods Diet
Michael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?

For sure! As a cancer survivor, reducing processed foods and excess sugar is key to staying healthy.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

Yikes. I think our family does a good job of keeping down our food waste. I typically plan meals ahead of time so that I don't buy items that may go unused.
