Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

My challenge is going really well, but I do forget to get online and post. I am thankful for reminder emails that have gotten me here a few times!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?

Using a reusable water bottle is a longtime habit of mine. Having a bottle that keeps my water cold and my ice icy is a deal maker for me. My water is colder than it would be if I used a regular plastic bottle. Having a bottle I feel good about getting it clean makes me more comfortable too. I would encourage everyone to find the perfect bottle for you. It will help!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

Using my own mug from home is a standard practice for me. Not only am I not wasting paper products=trees, I am making my coffee at home too. I should really calculate what the savings is over a years worth of lattes! Honestly, I'm not sure how much a tall latte is these days!

My challenges are going pretty well overall I just need to get myself to a farmer's market! Maybe I will have to add a pumpkin patch trip too!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Buy From a Farmers Market
What is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?

I am growing ginger, basil and green onions in pots in my apartment. Choosing to grow my own food (even in this small amount) I am not using the plastic bag, the rubber band or tagging/packaging info that I would possible be throwing away. And I am saving money at the same time!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

I am a big fan of shoes. Some buy them and toss them when they wear down. I tend to invest a little more in a better shoe initially and have it resoled/retreaded to wear again instead of treating them like a disposable item.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?

In general I carry an oversized bag with me with my small purse inside. Thank makes of an automatic bag for small items. I always carry a box and reusable bags in my car so I am never without. As soon as I unload groceries I put the bags back in the car.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Choose Two-Sided Printing
Choosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?

I love that our networked printers are set for two sided printing so I don't even have to think about it!
