Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Lauren Darcey 10/03/2018 4:41 PMI FINALLY found a place to recycle corks. They just started in Boston at Whole Foods. Now I put my corks in my reusable bags and can recycle them when I shop there. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Join a Local CSADependable fresh food, better prices (cutting out carbon-heavy supply chain and grocery stores), supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these benefits (or others not listed here) inspire you the most?
Lauren Darcey 10/03/2018 4:39 PMOne of the things I love about our CSA is how little we waste. We got a full share, we pick it up two blocks away at the local health clinic, and we can leave any veggies or fruits we don't need for the week on heavy weeks and they call food insecure familes to share the extra produce. So we get the larger share, but we also give to the community and help others eat local and support local farmers. -
Lauren Darcey 10/03/2018 4:26 PMHi! Looking forward to this challenge. Our family is super pumped to do this! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Walk InsteadHalf of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Do you feel that this fact applies to you? If so, how might you incorporate more muscle-powered transportation in your daily life?
Lauren Darcey 10/03/2018 4:24 PMWalking to and from school each day is so much better than driving 10 miles to/from school twice a day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Avoid refined sugarBefore you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?
Lauren Darcey 10/03/2018 4:23 PMI've always been pretty good with sugar avoidance, but I feel better with less. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Lauren Darcey 10/03/2018 4:22 PMThe American diet has often favored hunter over gatherer. The beef industry and western ranch lore (buffalo) is tied to our national identity. But the methane and pollution caused by the cattle industry is really, really bad. I just don't know how you make soy products as sexy as a slab of steak, to be honest. Meatless Mondays works. Making other proteins affordable and tasty and teaching everyone how to cook them well (I always ruin tofu) would help. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Choose Organic IngredientsCan organic farming feed the world? Which side of the argument do you fall on? Why?
Lauren Darcey 10/03/2018 4:17 PMI'd like to start with FARMING can actually feed the world. We have so much waste and so much hunger. Sustainable farming is central to our future on this planet, and we should do our best to make sure we continue to progress towards healthy farming principles like organic/low pesticide/water-conscious practices. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Locally-Sourced MealsIf you were to only eat what is in season locally, what would be the hardest for you to give up?
Lauren Darcey 10/03/2018 4:15 PMAvocados. Avocados. Avocados.
Also, because our growing seasons are so short here, we would have to eat canned and frozen food much of the time or greatly increase our greenhouse abilities. Like Iceland!
