Jenny's actions
Community
Support Native Communities
I will use the resource links provided and spend 60 minutes learning about the native populations that lived in my area prior to colonization, and what I can do to support those that still exist.
Water
Conserve Toilet Water
I will save up to 12 gallons (45 L) of water a day by flushing only when necessary.
Community
Support Businesses Owned by People of Color
Racial inequity is a sustainability problem. I will support businesses owned by people of color in my community whenever I shop.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Transportation
Choose a Carbon Offset
If buying a plane ticket, I will also buy a carbon offset.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 20 minute(s) each day.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Conserve Toilet WaterWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Jenny DeRocher 10/08/2018 10:53 AMBanning sprinklers in lawns would be nice. I see sprinklers on while it's raining or days that it will rain or already has rained all the time. And we have gotten more than enough rain this season, so their is really no excuse to use sprinklers. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?
Jenny DeRocher 10/08/2018 10:52 AMBecause I do not have a car, I almost always carry a rather large tote bag or backpack on me, or my bike pannier bags. So this is usually pretty easy to handle. Sometimes when I get groceries, I have to throw a few items in my pockets or carry something in my hands, but it works. The local co-op has a nice system where customers can borrow a box to carry their items home or to their car and then bring the box back next time to keep reusing them, which is nice too. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Jenny DeRocher 10/08/2018 10:49 AMInstead of going out for a beer with friends, I will begin going for a walk before or after the beer. I do this with some of my friends, but there are a few more I could start doing this with. I also ride my bike to commute and I think I will start making my ride longer and going through some nature trails on my way home to get in some extra time. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
Jenny DeRocher 10/08/2018 10:47 AMI usually power my computer down every day, but do not turn of my two monitors. I have started doing that because it was really only laziness from keeping me from doing that. My officemates usually keep the light to our office off, but I tend to like it on. I will experiment and try keeping it off for this month to see if I can get used to it.
