Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

Life needs balance; the earth needs balance; we need balance . . . balance of nature, balance between wet and dry, predator and prey and also between vegetarian eaters and plant food. When things get out of balance, we end up with the climate mess and pollution we have today, with a small number of very wealthy people who exploit others and the earth, and a huge number of people who don't have enough to live on.

People also need balance in their own lives: the wisdom to work for enough and to not be greedy; the time to spend participating in work that benefits others and the need to restore the self.  I believe that when personal balance gets out of whack, it contributes to imbalances - and disasters - such as war, poverty, species extinction, pollution  and disturbance in habitats and of natural cycles such as weather and biodiversity.  We are all connected.
