Reflection QuestionFood Advocate for More Food OptionsGiven the impact of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers on both the natural world and our food systems, what do you think about the use of these products in agriculture?
Moonrose Doherty 10/24/2018 4:22 PMThe impact of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers on us and the natural world has been devastating and continues to impact us in ways that we are just now allowing to come to light. The impacts are most heavily felt in communities of color and low-income and is environmental injustice/environmental racism. -
Moonrose Doherty 10/24/2018 10:48 AMThanks Eco-Panthers for being such a great team. I look forward to next year. -
Reflection QuestionHealth Learn About Local Environmental Justice ConcernsWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Moonrose Doherty 10/24/2018 10:40 AMAttended a lecture by Dr. Denise V. Rodgers: "Persistent Health Disparities: Understanding the Role of Social Determinants, Implicit Bias and Racism" which addressed the role of inequality in social determinants as contributors to disparities in outcomes by race/ethnicity, and the role of discrimination, racism and implicit bias as contributors to inequality in social determinants and health outcomes. https://echo360.org/media/f0793b80-ae01-4d8f-a5fc-d7c25b3f144f/public -
Reflection QuestionHealth Learn More about Food DesertsWhat are the implications of access to nutritious food for a community?
Moonrose Doherty 10/24/2018 10:26 AMLearned a little bit more about the food desert in our community, one of which is located east of 82nd Avenue and how food deserts impact our community members not only by restricting access to nutritious food, but how every little piece has a ripple: traveling further to get to a grocery store turns a 14 hour day into a 16 hour day and determines what you purchase if you are carrying your groceries and that lack of access to nutritious foods effects a child's ability to study and effects health outcomes. Also, maps of food desert locations often coincide with neighborhoods that are predominantly low-income and people of color. So the food desert conversation is a conversation about racial justice and health disparities. -
Reflection QuestionFood Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?
Moonrose Doherty 10/24/2018 10:10 AMI watched Seed: The Untold Story, Food Inc., King Corn and the Rotten series on Netflix
I plan on watching the 25 titles in this list: https://foodtank.com/news/2013/09/twenty-six-films-every-food-activist-must-watch/
that I have not seen yet, including La Cosecha, A Farmer in Africa: Property Rights, A Place at the Table, and The Hidden Cost of Hamburgers. -
Reflection QuestionHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Moonrose Doherty 10/24/2018 10:01 AMRight now finding ten to thirty minutes each day to squeeze in structured exercise is a challenge. In the future I would definitely like to try exercising with friends or exercising in nature somewhere. -
Reflection QuestionHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Moonrose Doherty 10/24/2018 9:58 AMPracticing gratitude and appreciation is a part in keeping myself centered and mentally healthy. Lately, I've been looking into how things that I am grateful for and appreciative of are related to my privileges, so that I can recognize that and understand it better and not "appreciate" on a surface level or feel "lucky" for something that is directly related to white privilege or cis privilege or economic privilege, etc. -
Reflection QuestionWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Moonrose Doherty 10/24/2018 9:53 AMI know a lot about the recycling industry however this challenge helped me delve into a little investigation on plastic film and I gained some knowledge there. -
Reflection QuestionHealth Avoid refined sugarBefore you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?
Moonrose Doherty 10/24/2018 9:51 AMI generally don't eat a lot of sugar, but because of Halloween coming up I've noticed a lot of candy in the office where I work twice a week. Surprisingly, it was a challenge to avoid the candy those two days a week! -
Reflection QuestionFood Buy From a Farmers MarketWhat is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?
Moonrose Doherty 10/24/2018 9:42 AMChoosing to support local farmers who practice sustainable farming allows farming to continue in our communities, supports healthy ecosystems, and supports a local economy that is rooted in small independently-owned farms who are then available to teach and foster the next generation of beginning small farmers. Plus you get amazingly fresh fruits and veggies that were just picked and retain more vitamins when they've reached your mouth!
