Josh's actions
Nature
Forage for My Food
I will use the 'Learn More' resources below to find where I can forage for my own food locally.
Health
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend at least 20 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.
Health
More Fruits and Veggies
I will eat a heart healthy diet by adding 2 cup(s) of fruits and vegetables each day to achieve at least 4 cups per day.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 25 minute(s) each day.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 15-minute walk outside each day.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Forage for My FoodAmongst the motivations for foraging are: a source of food; means of income; connecting with nature; cultural tradition; or transmitting "local ecological knowledge, and a means for stewarding local and native plant populations" (McLain et al. 2012, 13). Which of these would be your chief motivation and why?
Josh E 10/23/2018 9:40 AMLocal ecological knowledge is largely lost on the last 2 generations. I believe it is critically important that we get more connected with our local natural environments and learn how to live with and enjoy the world as it exists naturally. Only people who genuinely feel in their hearts that this is important will pursue it, but it is definitely worth pursuing for the depth of enrichment that is available right outside our doors. We live in such a rich, wonderful, and beautiful world, if only we'll spend time enjoying it for what it is. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Support Pollution ReductionWhat environmental factors affect human health in your region, and how do they affect it?
Josh E 10/23/2018 9:36 AMIt is very interesting living in a residential area that is adjacent to industrial manufacturing facilities, a train yard, an airport, and a busy arterial. I'm very often amazed that we have any clean drinking water or breathable air. However, when I spend time out in the woods with my dogs or just hiking by myself, I realize that it would take an incredible amount of active human activity to offset the passive cleansing effect that nature has always employed to mitigate its environment. The Earth is definitely an adaptable and relatively self-cleaning organism - even modern water filtration systems are engineered based on principles from nature. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
Josh E 10/16/2018 8:55 AMI've been doing more cardio... it really is refreshing in the morning before work, and makes it easier to focus throughout the day. -
Josh E 10/11/2018 9:22 AMI'm trying to figure out how to exercise without using electricity. Sometimes I have to have the lights on when I'm working out because the sun comes out later in the day now that it's fall. I wonder if it would be safe to use a candle... but I might forget to blow it out when I leave. -

Josh E 10/08/2018 7:23 AMSo far so good. I've learned a lot about urban foraging, and some of the different types of trees planted by the City near where I live. Many of these produce edible products, and there are TONS of them!
