REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Personal Waste AuditWhy is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?
Emily Easley 10/24/2018 11:34 AMI think it's difficult to relate our individual purchases to overall impact because we're not seeing the bigger picture in the moment. Throughout the last month, I've been tracking the amount of trash and recyclables we put out on a weekly basis. It's really got me thinking about the product we buy and what kind of packaging they come in. My hope is that I can continue to reduce the amount of goods that come in non-recyclable packaging I purchase. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my HomeTo what extent do you believe that environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?
Emily Easley 10/22/2018 9:16 AMI think environmental factors play a huge part on my health. From the air I breath to the soil that's used to grow the food I eat, pollution of the environment can greatly effect my health and wellness. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Emily Easley 10/15/2018 2:23 PMThis weekend I went for a run on the Fish Lake Trail in Spokane. Getting outside and nature cleansing is such a great way to feel grounded in your own community. In a place like Spokane, it can open your eyes to the great outdoors that surround our city. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Plant an Herb GardenConsider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?
Emily Easley 10/15/2018 2:21 PMGiven that we're just going into fall, I chose to plant a small, indoor, window garden with some basic herbs - basil, rosemary and parsley. In the spring, I plan to plant a bigger outdoor, square-foot garden to grow veggies and some fruit over the summer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Buy From a Farmers MarketWhat is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?
Emily Easley 10/09/2018 9:17 AMEarlier this year I removed meat from my diet which I believe has greatly reduced my personal footprint. To reduce my footprint further, I could by dried beans instead of canned. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Turn it offHow is electricity generated where you live? How does it impact the environment, animals, and humans?
Emily Easley 10/09/2018 9:13 AMThe local utility providing power for my house is one of the greenest in the nation, with a diverse portfolio of generation. Hydro, solar, wind and bio all contribute a cleaner, greener generation mix. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Whole Foods DietMichael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?
Emily Easley 10/08/2018 9:33 AMTotally agree with this statement! Research has shown that a plant-based diet is the best, healthiest diet there is. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Go for a Daily WalkFresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?
Emily Easley 10/03/2018 2:58 PMTaking a walk helps to clear my head and allows me to focus more on the tasks in front of me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth More Fruits and VeggiesWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How can we start shifting from a meat-focused food culture to a more plant-based one?
Emily Easley 10/03/2018 2:57 PMEarlier this year I gave up meat and became vegetarian. One of my main reasons was to lessen my personal impact on the environment. Even if all Americans can reduce their meat consumption to one or twice a week we could make a huge impact. Also, if meat must be consumed, source it locally. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Emily Easley 10/03/2018 2:54 PMI'd like to shift my sleep schedule so that I fall asleep a bit earlier and wake up a bit earlier. Turning off electronics and putting away my phone earlier in the evening has helped!
