REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? Do you know how your compost will be used and the benefits it has on the environment?
Troy Erickson 10/24/2018 4:10 PMI rarely if ever leave any food scraps from my meals or meal prep. Partly from preparing pre-packaged food and partly from eating at food carts a lot. So, I never had an opportunity to compost any food waste during this competition. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Troy Erickson 10/24/2018 4:07 PMAs the lecture panel we watched stated, the minority, fringe, and poor communities are effected most by environmental contamination. They specifically called out water quality effecting fishing throughout the Gorge and Willamette which has effected the annual fishing industry and food supply. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationThe US spends roughly 20% of its federal budget on defense. In contrast, 2% goes to education, 20% goes to social security and 3% goes to transportation infrastructure. Do these numbers surprise you at all? Why or why not?
Troy Erickson 10/11/2018 8:56 AMNot in the slightest. Our highways are crumbling, and public transit in most cities are increasingly underfunded and labeled a waste of tax dollars. Irrespective, they serve a vital service to those who have no other means of transportation, and in cities with successful transit systems significant ridership and support for public transit is found in spades. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Troy Erickson 10/08/2018 3:19 PMI stopped going to coffee shops regularly, a few years back, and continue to minimize the use of single use coffee cups.
