Maryl's actions
Health
Take Control
Both system and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Transportation
Work from Home
I will work from home 5 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 2 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Energy
Online Energy Audit
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Health
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 30 minute(s) each day.
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 20 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, their causes, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 15 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Nature
Forage for My Food
I will use the 'Learn More' resources below to find where I can forage for my own food locally.
Community
Express My Support
I will find out who in my state makes decisions that impact the environment and express my support for more environmental actions.
Transportation
Choose a Carbon Offset
If buying a plane ticket, I will also buy a carbon offset.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn About Local Environmental Justice ConcernsWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Maryl Fisher 10/24/2018 3:51 PMEnvironmental irresponsibility impacts everyone in the community. Those who choose to be irresponsible shortchange themselves and others through their shortsightedness. When we choose to care for the environment we demonstrate good stewardship that not only impacts our surroundings but also our sense of community. -
Maryl Fisher 10/23/2018 5:04 PMGreat presentation today at CAES! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Express My SupportWhat sustainability issues are most pressing or prominent where you live?
Maryl Fisher 10/23/2018 5:02 PMWe had an interesting discussion in the CAES presentation today about community environmental efforts. One effort that impressed me was the “smartscape” landscaping to reduce water consumption. The challenge to implement more projects is the upfront cost. -
Maryl Fisher 10/22/2018 2:01 PMGlad I had a chance to participate in the EcoChallenge! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Take ControlHow do environmental health, community health, and your personal health intersect?
Maryl Fisher 10/22/2018 1:59 PMNo one lives in a vacuum; we are impacted by our surroundings. There are some aspects we have more control over, such as lifestyle choices. Our attitudes and actions also influence our health, the community as a whole and the environment. If we focus on making a positive impact on ourselves and the world around us then we can be a force to change things for the better. -
Maryl Fisher 10/21/2018 7:20 PMLast few days of EcoChallenge - keep going strong -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Choose a Carbon OffsetA round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?
Maryl Fisher 10/21/2018 7:16 PMTechnology options such as Skype or FaceTime or web conferences can be used in place of some air travel -
