I think when you know where your food comes from, it allows you to know what you're consuming. If you know your produce at the farmer's market comes from a home garden that doesn't use pesticides, it gives you a sense of security. If you buy beef from a local farmer, then you know what that beef is being fed and how they're treated (living conditions, etc...), which is turn allows you to be a knowledgeable consumer. I think eating locally not only supports your own local economy, but also improves your quality of life. Food that is mass produced isn't nearly as healthy, in my opinion.
