REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Connect with a NonprofitWhat inspires you to act toward a more sustainable community?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Donate to or Volunteer for Low-Income Solar InitiativesEquitable access, environmental justice and creating employment opportunities are just a few advantages of low-income solar programs. Can you think of other benefits that could come from initiatives like this? Which advantages of low-income solar do you find the most compelling?
Josh Gipper 10/24/2018 3:09 PMThis is awesome, I live in a community that has alot of solar and having it in more communities is amazing. Sent $20 to the Colorado region. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Express My SupportWhat sustainability issues are most pressing or prominent where you live?
Josh Gipper 10/24/2018 8:18 AMReached out to Janna West Heiss, sustainability manager for the City and County of Denver. She does great work and aside from supporting her in my message I also floated a possible project idea taking shared socioeconomic pathways and refining them to a local city level. Would be a very exciting project to build. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? Do you know how your compost will be used and the benefits it has on the environment?
Josh Gipper 10/24/2018 7:48 AMWe take advantage of Denver's compost program. It's ~$80/year and includes the large wast bin and smaller kitchen bin. The effect has been huge, we're a family of four and our landfill waste less garbage bag a week. Between compost and recycling we've made a big impact. The cost per year is honestly offset by NOT buying trash bags for both home waste and yard waste. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go by BikeHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Josh Gipper 10/24/2018 7:45 AMI run into so many of my coworkers each morning. I'm pretty new to this company (2 months) but love seeing everyone riding in. Beneficial to both my career and social life within WSP to be out there riding. Doesn't hurt that my bike is huge! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Josh Gipper 10/24/2018 7:43 AMHappy to see that my native plant choices are helping pollinators. Living in Denver's Stapleton neighborhood it's hard for these pollinators crossing through all of these fences. I've added morning glories to go over some fenced areas, this could help them out. Mid to late summer the thing is crawling with bees! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn More about Food DesertsWhat are the implications of access to nutritious food for a community?
Josh Gipper 10/24/2018 7:34 AMI thought this quote was intereesting "4 billion people have no access to electricity worldwide". Kingo Energy has a very compelling solution to this problem. Worth checking out.
