Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.

It is so easy to get caught up in everyday activities, that we lose sight of the far reaching consequences of the things we do and do not  do with our 24 daily hours.
I have been a member of Slow Food for years, yet I am not really involved.  The EcoChallenge has given me a reason to look at the things that are important to me, and important for all of mankind, animals and our planet, with like minded people.  It has pushed me to get involved by signing pledges, choosing and working on goals and writing to other team members, who have put their ideas and efforts out on the web to encourage and engage their team members to be and keep involved.  It's a place to "meet" and to keep your "practice" strong: to set goals and to keep you on target.   I'm excited for the good we will be able to accomplish together, for our personal growth and for the future of our planet.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Meditate
What would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?

For me, meditation is a time to try to clear my mind of all thoughts, that's why I chose only 5 minutes for a beginning time.  Reflecting, for me, would be doing just the opposite.

An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

No it does not surprise me. And I know I should want to give the money to charity.  But, I do not.  I would rather spend it on a vacation.  Vacations make lifetime memories, wasted food does not.  If you think families waste food, you should see how much food gets thrown out after every meal in nursing homes. Fed and State Law safety  regulations forbid the unopened and refused food to go back to the kitchen. Understandable, but, so many people in the US are hungry and all of that food just goes to waste.

I'm surprised to hear that the Good Samaritan Act doesn't cover nursing homes. Such a shame.

Fresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?

In relation to air, any exercise will make you breathe in more oxygen.  More oxygen is good for your brain.  The exercise gets your blood flowing faster, feeding your brain and allowing you to: feel good from the endorphins released when you exercise: great for creative thinking!

Completely agree. I do most of my best creative thinking in the fresh air!

What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How can we start shifting from a meat-focused food culture to a more plant-based one?

We have a lot of cattle ranches.  Our culture focuses on eating meat at most meals.  In many other countries, meat is not this plentiful.

Changing will be a slow process for this country.  But, we can start, one person,  family at a time.  Food choices for less meat will change the providers needs for sales in grocery stores.
