  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Spend Time Outside
Rachel Carson said that we need the beauty and mysteries of the natural world for our spiritual and emotional development. Does that ring true for you? What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time indoors?

It absolutely rings true for me.  For a culture that spends most of its time indoors a disconnect happens.  We take for granted our water, our air, our food, everything.  We forget they are finite resources and need to be protected.

The world is profound and beautifully mysterious. Let's protect it for its own sake if not for ours.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity Needs Vs. Wants
How is creativity necessary for practicing simplicity?

Creativity is necessary to find different ways than what has been done in the past without thought. Whether it's researching new ways to reuse items or repair things to avoid having to buy new. I spend a lot of time watching creative tutorials to discover new ways of doing old, wasteful things.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Drive Less
How has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

    Brenda Grant's avatar
    Brenda Grant 10/03/2018 9:07 AM
Wish there were more public transportation options available. When I lived in Germany the public transportation was very good and I wish we had something like that here.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Leave No Trace
Educator Stephanie Kaza advises her students to focus on what they care about most when addressing the enormity of ecological problems. Is there a specific area you feel particularly called to work on?

Littering makes me incredibly angry and I think people need to pay much more attention to the litter surrounding them. Whenever possible I always pick up litter I see even if it embarrasses the people I'm with.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health Eliminate Toxic Plastics
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Brenda Grant's avatar

I never use straws. I have purchased mesh produce bags to replace the single use bags at the store and use reusable bags for purchases. Any other single use item I use I ensure it can be recycled onsite or take it home for proper recycling or destruction.
