Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

    Waste
    Reducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?

    I am still receiving catalogs in the mail that are addressed to my father or former housemates.  Or ones addressed to me, that I don't want.  During the October EcoChallenge, I will contact the senders and asked to be removed from future mailings.

      I've started to do this!   It doesn't take too long; and there are customer service reps at all hours available to help with getting removed from catalog lists.

    Water
    What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    I forget to request "no straw" when I eat out.  I have a metal straw, and I also don't mind drinking from a glass or cup without a straw.  I can do better, and will commit to asking for "no straw" from this point forward!
