Tia's actions
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 30 minute(s) each day.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 15-minute walk outside each day.
Food
Whole Foods Diet
I will enjoy 1 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Health
Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my Home
I will spend 60 minutes researching toxic chemicals found in cleaning supplies and personal care products and remove them from my home.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 30 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, their causes, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Energy
Online Energy Audit
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 15 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Tia Hansen 10/24/2018 7:33 AMpollinators provide lots of ecosystem services. Without them we couldn't have almonds! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Audit Toxic Cleaning Products in my HomeTo what extent do you believe that environmental factors contribute to your own health or issues with health?
Tia Hansen 10/22/2018 1:35 PMGenerally, my home was pretty good when it comes to toxic products, but I do think that exposure outside my home, particlarly to bad air quallity contributes to my health. I alway seem to catch a cold when the air is bad. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Online Energy AuditWhat most interested or surprised you about your own energy footprint?
Tia Hansen 10/22/2018 1:32 PMIt was surprising how much my long/hot showers contributed to the energy savings opporunity.
-
Tia Hansen 10/21/2018 10:26 AMDid some more experimenting with preserving - made bread and butter pickles and used all the green tomatoes from my garden for salsa verde. -
Tia Hansen 10/16/2018 9:00 PMHaving the hardest time with cutting my showers back to 5 min. It so hard to get out when it's cold outside-
Nicholina O'Donnell 10/16/2018 9:22 PMRight? It's so tempting to linger under the hot water.

Liz Zavodsky (Ecochallenge Staff) 10/15/2018 8:05 PMThanks for being mindful of them while you travel. That alone is taking steps in the right direction. -
Meghan Jones 10/15/2018 6:49 PMTotally agree. Let us know if you discover any tips or tricks!

REFLECTION QUESTIONWater 5-Minute ShowersFive minute showers are an impressive step toward reducing your water footprint. What is the next step you can take?
Tia Hansen 10/05/2018 8:50 AMI addition to shortening my showers (sooo hard), I can set my water heater temperature lower so that it consumes less energy to keep my showers warm. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Tia Hansen 10/05/2018 8:49 AMIn addition to skipping the straw, I'm can shift to reusable containers instead of plastic baggies for packing lunch and snacks. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Tia Hansen 10/05/2018 8:48 AMBy slowing down and walking instead of driving, you notice that there's a lot more nature right outside your front door than you notice. You also discover little spots to watch change with the seasons. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Try a New Way to PrepCanning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?
Tia Hansen 10/03/2018 9:23 AMI'm planning on preserving tomatoes (pasta sauce and salsa) and pickles from this summer's garden. I've already preserved some tomato jam.
