REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?

Mary Hartshorn 10/24/2018 11:29 AMThe treasure truck is amazing! If you have Amazon Prime they will let you know what they have that day and how much it costs, usually a pretty big discount. I have seen lots of things from steaks, to coffee pots, to candy. And some times they have free stuff. Usually it moves to a couple locations throughout the day but it tells you the time frame of when it will be there. Downtown, it's usually in a large parking lot in Old Town. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Forage for My FoodAmongst the motivations for foraging are: a source of food; means of income; connecting with nature; cultural tradition; or transmitting "local ecological knowledge, and a means for stewarding local and native plant populations" (McLain et al. 2012, 13). Which of these would be your chief motivation and why?
Mary Hartshorn 10/18/2018 4:10 PMI think foraging for food is an interesting concept, and from what I have read, by biggest takeaway is that it connects you with nature and you have a more personal connection to your food (as weird as that sounds) because you spent the time and effort to gather it, rather than buy it from a store. I suppose this would be my main motivation if I were to begin foraging for food.-
Teri Poppino 10/22/2018 11:46 AMI love this idea, Mary! I grew up walking through my grandparents' woods, browsing along the way. Early to mid-summer are the wild strawberries, late summer brings huckleberries, salmonberries, thimble berries, salal, blackberries, blackcaps. I also slurp down some foxglove though some would say not to because of the digitalis--I hasn't hurt me yet and it's so sweet! I know about fiddle heads (ferns) though I've never tried them. Sometimes there are mushrooms, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to risk mistaking a safe one from one that comes close! I do love making pies and crisps from apples that I've picked. I think my biggest motivation is feeling that connection to the earth. I think that one of the reasons people are indifferent to GMOs and large scale farming is because they don't have that personal connection. They seem to prefer convenience.

Mary Hartshorn 10/17/2018 8:59 AMI always say that I don't like being in nature, I just like to look at it. There's so many bugs and a lot of mud/dirt which are things I don't like but spending time out doors, especially in the Pacific Northwest, can be very beautiful and peaceful. This weekend we explored an ice cave in Washington. It was cold, but other than that it was such a nice day. The sun was shinning and the air was cool and crisp. The leaves were changing colors and it definitely showed me the difference of being out in nature versus here in the city.
