James Hinshaw 10/05/2018 2:09 PMMost of my actions are going well. Sugar is my weakness. So that's not gone so well. Need to exercise more too. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
James Hinshaw 10/05/2018 2:07 PMI've always found that workouts are easier and motivation better when running or biking with a partner. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Eliminate Toxic PlasticsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
James Hinshaw 10/05/2018 2:06 PMI reuse bags at stores, especially at the grocery store. But so much food has excess packaging. So many plastic bags. Even our garbage goes into plastic bags.-
Nicholina O'Donnell 10/06/2018 1:33 PMThis is so true. It's kind of shocking when you really look at all the packaging that gets thrown away.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Avoid refined sugarBefore you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?
James Hinshaw 10/05/2018 2:03 PMThis is an extremely difficult challenge for me. I ate some cookies. I feel like will power is a myth. I certainly don't seem to have much. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
James Hinshaw 10/05/2018 2:01 PMWhere I see food waste is at restaurants. The amount of rice that gets thrown out at local TexMex places could feed an army. They know that rice is a low priority on the plate of their customers. I think it is just to make the meal seem bigger. People want to get more for their money, and a pile of rice kind of tricks them into thinking there is more value to their meal. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
James Hinshaw 10/05/2018 1:55 PMWe are relatively wealthy and can afford the expense of eating meat daily. Many people around the world cannot. If we are to change the meat focus of our food culture, people need to be educated about really good vegetarian foods they can make, the health benefits, and the environmental benefits.-
Meghan Jones 10/05/2018 10:43 PMJim, thank you for all of your posts! You are inspiring me to think more about what I eat. I may add the no refined sugar challenge to my own list based on your example.
