I love this challenge and would love to do it again throughout the year.

Reflecting on the EcoChallenge so far: Some challenges are going better than others and I'm surprised by which ones have been easier. Enjoying the sunset has become a habit most days now. Driving less has had mixed results with unexpected things coming up, but just being conscious of it helps. I still have some one time challenges to do. And a great deal of de-cluttering.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity De-Clutter My Home
How can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?

By getting more organized and paring down, it will be easier to see what I have and avoid purchasing duplicates or items I don't need yet. Also, I can remind myself that I can almost always get (whatever item) at a later date and/or at another sale. I will probably be moving to another apartment in less than a year. Thinking about that will be another incentive not to buy anything that is not absolutely necessary.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Go Paperless
Reducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?

I constantly feel overwhelmed by paper at home, between bills and statements for me and school materials for my kids. It's so much, plus all of the online information and emails. Then after I spend all the time to sort and shred or recycle i feel badly that it's such a waste of paper. I am going to look at each piece of mail I receive and see if it is something I can stop receiving or at least receive by email.

    Nature Explore My Area
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?

When I'm outdoors, especially in the woods or at the beach, I feel calm and connected to the earth. It makes me feel part of my environment.

I tend to observe my environment, natural or manmade, more closely at a walking pace than a driving pace. I see more beauty as well as become more aware of changes and needs.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Drive Less
How has your access to various kinds of transportation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?

I didn't have access to public transportation until I was in college, aside from taking the school bus. Maybe since I was becoming independent then, I've also always felt like public transportation is a form of independence. It's not a perfect system, but it really helps people. I am really hoping that Trimet extends public bus lines to my son's new high school.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Nature Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
Father Thomas Berry says, "...our primary purpose is celebration. Celebration of the dawn and the sunset and the different seasons of the year is a religious ritual, a way in which humans can establish their integral relationship with the universe, with the planet Earth." Respond to Berry's assertion.

I'm not religious. But I do feel so calm and connected to life and to myself when I spend time outside, especially in the woods or at the beach.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Plant an Herb Garden
Consider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?

I'm in an apartment. So a small windowsill "garden" would work best.
