Say No to Plastic Straws

An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Work from Home
It takes the average worker in the United States 26 minutes to travel to work. One way to fix long commutes would be to make cities more affordable. An even simpler option: promote the use of telework. Are you in an industry that would allow you to work from home? What are some obstacles you might find yourself facing while working from home?

I have found that making sure that the items that can wait for work at home are left for work at home. Being effective with scheduling can be more efficient than just task completion.

I have Multiple Sclerosis and several of the Eco Challenge areas have helped me deal with my condition. Eating whole and healthy has enabled me to lose over 50 lbs (on purpose)! De-cluttering my life has not only helped me break the chains of hoarding but enabled me to enjoy the moment of now and not worry so much about the future. I am learning to love what is around me now and the majestic and powerful beauty of nature. I will take another step on the path of life today because I want to, not because I have to!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Simplicity De-Clutter My Home
How can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?

De-cluttering your life can help de-clutter everything else. When we slow down and enjoy the moment, the need for "things" diminishes. Be in the moment!

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Choose Two-Sided Printing
Choosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?

Requesting the document be printed double sided when it is asked for can help.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Water Say No to Plastic Straws
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I use a cloth napkin instead of paper whenever I can!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Whole Foods Diet
Michael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?

Eating whole and organic has helped my condition improve, even with the required doctor visits!
