Drake's actions
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Waste
Choose Two-Sided Printing
I will save up to .21 lbs (.09 kg) of paper each day by switching from one-sided printing to two-sided.
Simplicity
De-Clutter My Home
I will de-clutter, clean, and donate or recycle unneeded items in my home.
Transportation
Work from Home
I will work from home 3 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.
Food
Whole Foods Diet
I will enjoy 1 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.
Health
Healthy Sleep
Effectively working for sustainability requires self care! I will commit to getting 60 more minute(s) of sleep each night to achieve at least 7 hours per night.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Water
Fix Leaky Faucets
I will fix faucets or report leaky faucets to facilities that have been wasting up to 9 gallons (34 L) of water per faucet every day.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 5 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Energy
Online Energy Audit
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Work from HomeIt takes the average worker in the United States 26 minutes to travel to work. One way to fix long commutes would be to make cities more affordable. An even simpler option: promote the use of telework. Are you in an industry that would allow you to work from home? What are some obstacles you might find yourself facing while working from home?
Drake Kirkham 10/11/2018 6:09 AMI have found that making sure that the items that can wait for work at home are left for work at home. Being effective with scheduling can be more efficient than just task completion. -
Drake Kirkham 10/04/2018 6:42 AMI have Multiple Sclerosis and several of the Eco Challenge areas have helped me deal with my condition. Eating whole and healthy has enabled me to lose over 50 lbs (on purpose)! De-cluttering my life has not only helped me break the chains of hoarding but enabled me to enjoy the moment of now and not worry so much about the future. I am learning to love what is around me now and the majestic and powerful beauty of nature. I will take another step on the path of life today because I want to, not because I have to! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity De-Clutter My HomeHow can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?
Drake Kirkham 10/04/2018 6:33 AMDe-cluttering your life can help de-clutter everything else. When we slow down and enjoy the moment, the need for "things" diminishes. Be in the moment! -
Drake Kirkham 10/03/2018 10:53 AMOff to a great start! Ready for the challenge! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Choose Two-Sided PrintingChoosing two-sided printing can be an easy adjustment on your computer settings. How can you help others make this same switch? Can it be encouraged company wide?
Drake Kirkham 10/03/2018 10:49 AMRequesting the document be printed double sided when it is asked for can help. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Whole Foods DietMichael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?
Drake Kirkham 10/03/2018 10:45 AMEating whole and organic has helped my condition improve, even with the required doctor visits!
