Dana Lawson-Rivera 10/24/2018 7:58 AMThe EcoChallenge was a great way to become more aware of my surroundings and my impact in my community. It was fun to push myself to do new things and research important resources in Portland. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Advocate for More Food OptionsGiven the impact of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers on both the natural world and our food systems, what do you think about the use of these products in agriculture?
Dana Lawson-Rivera 10/16/2018 1:08 PMFirst we need to be educated in the effects of chemicals in and on our food. It is important to start with education and build from there. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Find Local Recycling DepotsOur ability to recycle certain things ebbs and flows based upon many factors. Luckily there are places that accept uncommon things to recycle or dispose of in a less harmful way. What did you find when looking for places to recycle items that can't be recycled in your curbside bin?
Dana Lawson-Rivera 10/15/2018 8:18 AMI found great information on how to properly dispose of Styrofoam, electronics, and yard waste. By taking the time to travel to your nearest recycling center or landfill, there are bins set aside for waste such as those listed above. It is free and very fast! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Go get a check upHow do you practice self care?
Dana Lawson-Rivera 10/15/2018 8:16 AMI set aside time for myself. This may be to read a book or go to the gym, but I love taking time to be alone with my thoughts. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Healthy SleepConsider how many hours of sleep you get now. How would you like to shift your sleep patterns? What are you finding works for you to be successful in this action?
Dana Lawson-Rivera 10/15/2018 8:15 AMFor me, it is critical to go to bed and wake up around the same time each day. By being in a regular pattern, I feel more rested and prepared for my day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn About Local Environmental Justice ConcernsWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Dana Lawson-Rivera 10/15/2018 8:14 AMPeople in low socioeconomic standing are often effected. They do not have enough money to repair or afford things that other citizens can. Many people must resort to processed food in order to feed themselves as the environment degrades. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Choose Organic IngredientsCan organic farming feed the world? Which side of the argument do you fall on? Why?
Dana Lawson-Rivera 10/15/2018 8:12 AMI think that it can. We must invest enough resources and time into Organic farming. It is important to treat the earth with respect and take care of the land so that future generations can prosper. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Dana Lawson-Rivera 10/15/2018 8:09 AMThere is a lot of hunting that occurs in North America that also coincides with American values of being strong and dominating those around us. As a country, we are not quick to value life of other animals. In order to shift from a meat focused culture, it is critical to educate people on nutrition and show that a balanced diet with less meat could be more healthy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Whole Foods DietMichael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?
Dana Lawson-Rivera 10/10/2018 7:46 AMI think it is critical to support our local farmers so that generations to come can ingest healthy foods that will support them and allow them to grow. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth HappinessHow does/can practicing gratitude keep you centered and motivated to work for a better world?
Dana Lawson-Rivera 10/03/2018 7:52 AMSending/writing these messages helped greatly with my own positivity and general outlook for my days. By practicing gratitude, I reminded myself why I do the work I do!
