Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 5 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

Rachael Lapeyre 10/24/2018 8:10 AMBeen a pretty awesome Ecochallenge! Good job everybody! -
Rachael Lapeyre 10/23/2018 11:07 AMStarted taking trash bags on my walks to pick up trash on the side of the road around my neighborhood. It is amazing how much trash is along side the road. You tend to not "see" it because we are so used to it just being there. -
Rachael Lapeyre 10/17/2018 2:20 PMActing responsibly to help our environment and health just makes you feel like a better person. <3 Make it a great day! -
Rachael Lapeyre 10/15/2018 5:06 PMWouldn't it be cool to make company community gardens where a portion of property could be dedicated to being a garden area and employees could take a 10 min break and tend to the garden, or use their lunch time to tend to the garden. We could grow veggies and fruits that could be donated to local food banks and homeless shelters! And it could get more people out of the office from time to time for increased activity!-

Rachael Lapeyre 10/15/2018 4:59 PMMy "why" for joining the EcoChallenge is wanting to challenge myself to rethink my every day impact on the environment. This is a way to hold myself more accountable to do better every day. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Zero-Waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
Rachael Lapeyre 10/12/2018 8:55 AMThe easiest way to make use of the entire vegetable would be to compost anything that cannot be consumed. And use that compost to grow more healthy delicious veggies!-
Sophia Thurman 10/16/2018 8:01 AMYou can also make stock from vegetable scraps.. "Stock" up for winter, haha!

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?
Rachael Lapeyre 10/12/2018 8:52 AMI think the major key is convenience. We are all hustling and bustling about all the time. Maybe keeping an extra reusable water bottle/container in your car and in your purse or back pack would be helpful. Most store have public water fountains for easy fill up! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable MugMaybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?
Rachael Lapeyre 10/08/2018 10:38 AMI received a Yeti mug as a gift and it has made a huge difference in my morning coffee habit. I want to have my coffee in that mug because my beverage stays hot/warm for hours. I don't even want a throw away cup because this option keep my beverage hot or cold so much longer than a throw away cup would. It was a wonderful gift and reusable investment! Plus they come in tons of amazing colors and sizes! I feel good because I am not creating waste! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Skip the StrawHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Rachael Lapeyre 10/08/2018 10:31 AMBy adding a 6th "R".
Reconsider.
Anytime you are thinking of throwing something away stop and give yourself a few seconds to reconsider. Could the item be recycled, reused, repaired, or repurposed?
We live in a society largely influenced by convenience, entitlement, and instant gratification. If we all took just a few more seconds to be thoughtful our small decisions as a population can make a huge difference to our environment. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Whole Foods DietMichael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?
Rachael Lapeyre 10/08/2018 10:27 AMI completely agree that so many health issues can be aided and sometimes completely remedied with a whole food diet. Processed food is hardly even food and certainly lacks nutrition while adding sometimes harmful and unnecessary additives.
