Waste

Skip the Straw

Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 4 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.

Do people with economic privilege have a responsibility to consume and own less? How can the concept of "reduce" be presented to those who may be struggling to have enough food, clothes, shelter?

People with economic privilege have the LARGEST responsibility to consume less, because they are the ones who have the natural ability to consume the most. The concept of “reduce” can be shared with those who have the least by partnering with organizations who reside to get them the items that they need, so that waste is minimized.

Simplicity Go for a Daily Walk
Fresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?

I like to walk with my preschooler and my ten month old to start my day when I am not at work. It is refreshing, invigorating, and a great way to spend some time thinking about what I need to get done for the day. I also enjoy the time to have conversation with my toddler. It keeps him engaged and I get to learn about what things he is thinking about.

How can you prevent yourself from accumulating more things in the future?

It used to be very easy to keep from accumulating things, because I had two kids and lived in an900sq ft condo. Now that we live in a large house, it is harder to keep from getting things.and filling the space. It takes mindfulness to realize what is necessary and what is not. I love participating in my local Buy Nothing group to share as well as find treasures.
