VICTORIA's actions
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.
Transportation
Go by Bike
I will commute by bike 4 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to 4.1 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Waste
Recycle Everything I Can
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 30 minutes researching and recycling all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 0 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Energy
Power Down the Computer
I will power down my computer and monitor when not using it for more than 2 hours, saving up to (1.1) lbs of CO2 each day that I do this.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

VICTORIA LONG 10/24/2018 2:36 PMI am more concious now of what I put in the trash bin as opposed to putting it aside for the recycle bin. Any unconsumed portion of a dinner meal is placed in the freezer for later consumption. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
VICTORIA LONG 10/24/2018 2:34 PMI was raised on beef, chicken and fish. I like them all equally. I have no intention of giving them up 100%, but will still commit to having three days per week where I do not consume animal protein from slaughter. Secondary products are still on the table (milk, cheese, eggs) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Recycle Everything I CanWhat have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?
VICTORIA LONG 10/24/2018 1:37 PMI found out that our recycle bin can be used for textiles as well as glass, metal plastic and paper. And our plastic recycle accepts recycle categories 1 thru 7. Free curbside pickups are available 4 times a year either bulky items, appliances, e-waste and household hazardous waste.
Now, it should not be an issue at all to recycle almost everything.-
Meghan Jones 10/24/2018 3:39 PMI wish all cities had such a robust recycling program! Very cool.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Weekly Meal PlanningAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
VICTORIA LONG 10/23/2018 9:19 AMKnowing that, I will certainly watch what I buy, and nothing on a whim. I would rather go on a tropical beach vacation with money saved. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Power Down the ComputerWhat are other easy things you could do to save energy and reduce your environmental footprint?
VICTORIA LONG 10/18/2018 4:41 PMturn lights off as I leave the room; use cool or cold water for laundry; get my water hog of a child to take a 10 minute shower instead of 25... -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go by BikeHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
VICTORIA LONG 10/17/2018 1:23 PMI get to say good morning to no less than 10 people while riding my bicycle to work on the trail behind my house. It takes me through two parks. On the way home however, all I can think about is getting home, so not a lot of engagement at the end of my day. I think I am just too tired. -
VICTORIA LONG 10/03/2018 8:25 AMOur City doesn't have recycle bins for all recycle categories, so the extra trip might not be as good as an idea given I have to use a gasoline powered car to take misc. items to recycle.
