Danielle's actions
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Food
Whole Foods Diet
I will enjoy 1 meal(s) each day free of processed foods.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 1 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of C02 over the course of the next year.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by opting into paperless billing and ending unwanted subscriptions.
Waste
Personal Waste Audit
I will collect all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Health
Take Control
Both system and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Danielle Lower 10/22/2018 11:36 AMThe real question is, do we need to shift from a meat-focused culture, or do we need to shift to a more ethically-conscious culture? I don't think eating meat is wrong or even environmentally "unfriendly". However, I do think the food industry has become unethical in many of it's practices regarding animal products. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Whole Foods DietMichael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?
Danielle Lower 10/22/2018 11:33 AMI agree. I believe in "all things in moderation". So I am not opposed to eating processed foods occasionally. However, I feel that too many people forget to think about the foods they eat each day and the micronutrients (or lack thereof) those foods may offer. The best source of vitamins and minerals is from the foods themselves, not from a small pill to make up for a crappy diet. -
Danielle Lower 10/15/2018 8:15 AMTook my waterbottle on a road trip this weekend to avoid buying plastic bottles of water along the way. -
