John's actions
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 45 minute(s) each day.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Simplicity
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a walk for 30 minutes each day.
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by opting into paperless billing and ending unwanted subscriptions.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will spend at least 60 minutes finding out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in my curbside bin.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Community
Raise Money For a Nonprofit
I will raise money to support Northwest Earth Institute or another local nonprofit.
Community
Join my Neighborhood Association
I will join my neighborhood association or another local group.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of C02 over the course of the next year.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

John Maternoski 10/24/2018 11:21 PMOMG the final day!! Thank you guys for letting me be a part of your team! Looking back, this challenge got me started on the habit of my gratitude journal, which has had a really positive impact for me. It helped kick my lagging running habit into gear, even motivating me to sign up for a HALF MARATHON that is going to push me to run more in the months ahead. And EcoChallenge 2018 gave me an excuse to FINALLY, after (literally!) years of procrastinating, recycle my old electronics and batteries. I'm grateful to have had this push, and I'm honored that I got to spend it with all of you. Can't wait to see you all soon! -
John Maternoski 10/22/2018 10:29 PMI fell behind on my running - it was one of my daily challenges, and I haven't done it in over a week and a half. BUT. Today I made it happen, and it felt SO good to be back at it. Looking forward to making it a priority again, long after the Challenge is over! -
John Maternoski 10/20/2018 1:24 PMToday I completed my one-time challenge of finding out where to recycle all my old electronics! I've had some things laying around my apartment for years that I just never took the time to find out where I should bring them. Today, any of the stuff that still worked, I took to Goodwill, and the rest went to Green Century Electronics Recycling!
I also brought a ton of batteries to them. I've been phasing out single-use batteries for about a year now. Today I recycled all those old batteries, and am proud that every battery in my apartment is now rechargable (except for my smoke detectors because it's banned by my landlord.)
It feels really good to finally check off that task that I've been putting off for soooo long! -

John Maternoski 10/11/2018 8:22 PMTake an early lunch TOMORROW and check out Women in Green at Sustainable Building Week!! -
John Maternoski 10/09/2018 11:48 PMI dunno what this applies to in the EcoChallenge, but it's gotta count for something - I just signed up for my first HALF MARATHON. Shamrock Run 2k19!! The plan is for my EcoChallenge walking/running to grow into longer and longer distances long after the challenge is over, eventually prepping me for a half marathon come March 17th. Either that or I'll give up on the entire plan on November 1st, then come Race Day, I'll die. I might just die. But, it will have led to this post and 5 more points for the HEA EcoChallenege team, so....worth it.

John Maternoski 10/08/2018 10:17 PMHAPPY SUSTAINABLE BUILDING WEEK, YOU GUYS!!!! Swing across the street to DOWA-IBI tomorrow (Tuesday) evening at 5:30 to catch Portland’s New Ecoroof Requirement: New Design and Maintenance Strategies. Some guy, who's no doubt smart, is going to talk a bunch about green roofs!
Side note...If the roofs are so green, why is the picture so yellow?!?

John Maternoski 10/07/2018 8:07 PMSo I was kind of cranky and in a foul mood all day today. When I sat down to write my gratitude entry for the day, I had to dig a little deeper than normal to find some positives. But in that process, the positives that I found were actually more meaningful and made me feel better than any other notes I've written so far. More than checking off my challenge for the day, the action had a positive impact that really helped on an otherwise kinda crummy day. And I'm grateful for that. -
John Maternoski 10/05/2018 8:04 PMI checked off my 'raise money for a non-profit' one-time challenge yesterday. I did it because I'm using that check-in as a pledge to hold myself accountable for donating to the Architects in Schools program at the AFO Honored Citizen dinner coming up on Tuesday. I like to think that by volunteering for organizations like AFO, I'm off the hook for actually giving money to them. But this challenge is a great reminder and a great excuse to donate. AiS is a great program, and they could have all the volunteers in the world - but without the dinero to make it happen, the program would cease to exist.
