Health
Avoid refined sugar
I will adopt a diet free of refined sugars, which eliminates sweetened beverages, candy, and processed foods.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn More about Food DesertsWhat are the implications of access to nutritious food for a community?
Whitney McClees 10/23/2018 4:49 PMNutritious food is the basis for many aspects of a community. It contributes to education, community connection, and health. Additionally, having nutritious food more easily accessible can potentially boost local farmers in areas where they may be struggling. Win-win situation. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Explore My AreaHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Whitney McClees 10/20/2018 4:46 AMSpending more time outdoors increases your tangible connection with a place and gives you a deeper, more intimate reason to protect it.-
Kristin Raffa 10/21/2018 1:14 PMI went for a hike this morning in the rain and it was beautiful!

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Support Native CommunitiesIndigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?
Whitney McClees 10/17/2018 1:20 PMBalance is vitally important to sustainability because it keeps us in check. It is important to remember what the history of an area is as we move forward. That also means giving *everyone* a seat at the table when sustainability initiatives are discussed. -
Whitney McClees 10/09/2018 5:27 PMGotta love a good zucchini noodle and sauce dish for dinner! -
Whitney McClees 10/06/2018 7:39 PMI used my daily challenge of 30 minutes of waking outside to explore the RISD Craft Fair in Providence. Not only was it a chance to explore somewhere new, but it also provided some good vitamin D! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Whitney McClees 10/06/2018 7:38 PMReceipts are something I’d like to collect less of. I’ve tried to have them emailed where possible but it’s not always an option. Additionally, I could contribute fewer plastic cups to the waste stream by either avoiding purchasing beverages when I go out places or be more diligent about bringing my own container and asking the vendor to use it. -
Whitney McClees 10/06/2018 7:26 PMMy challenge is going pretty well. I’m definitely busier this time around than I was in the spring so I have to concentrate more on making the time to log my actions and make a plan for my one-time challenges. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Whitney McClees 10/04/2018 8:08 AMI see a lot more of the neighborhood while walking. Plus, I get to enjoy the beautiful fall weather we're having. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Avoid refined sugarBefore you started this challenge, did you think you were 'addicted' to sugar? How do you feel now?
Whitney McClees 10/04/2018 3:08 AMI definitely felt like I was addicted to sugar before this challenge and that's exactly why I chose it. To decrease my consumption of processed sugars and foods. It's tricky but I'm determined. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Whitney McClees 10/04/2018 3:06 AMI think one of the things that contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places is the cost, especially meat at fast food restaurants. I think education is key in shifting a meat-focused food culture.
