Rebecca's actions
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of C02 over the course of the next year.
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 5 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.
Energy
Choose LED Bulbs
I will replace 2 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Food
Choose Organic Ingredients
I will enjoy 3 meal(s) cooked with organic ingredients each day.
Simplicity
Less Screen Time
I will replace 60 minute(s) of screen time each day with other activities.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

Rebecca Merrick 10/16/2018 9:42 AMJust moved into a new place, my roommate and I are putting together a plan to start composting as much as we can, which can in turn be used in our garden - Win win! -
Rebecca Merrick 10/12/2018 8:27 AMMade sure to bring a set of reusable bamboo utensils to keep at my desk and prevent using any plastic while at the office. -
Rebecca Merrick 10/11/2018 6:19 AMI just moved into a new house and although decorating a new space is fun, I am taking a needs vs. wants approach to my purchasing. Before you purchase something, try to spend a week or two and see if you are able to function without that item - You will be surprised how often we don't really need what we think we do. -
Rebecca Merrick 10/10/2018 5:57 AMLast night I challenged myself to not look at any screens an hour before bed - Can be hard to resist checking e-mail or going online but this really helped me wind down and sleep well! -
Rebecca Merrick 10/09/2018 6:15 AMWas able to walk to my local co-op last night and use plastic jars to buy some bulk goods - Using reusable jars helps keep your pantry organized and helps to keep you as zero-waste as possible! -
Rebecca Merrick 10/06/2018 10:09 PMChallenge going well - made sure to use reusable water bottle and shopping bags to help keep waste out of the landfill! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Less Screen TimeWhat did you notice in implementing this challenge? Was it hard to choose other activities over screen time? How did you decide to spend your time?
Rebecca Merrick 10/05/2018 12:31 PMNot spending hours in front of a screen is beneficial to both your physical and mental health. It's amazing how much you can accomplish if you set a timer for even just 20 minutes a night and ignore technology to focus on another task - whether it be exercising, cleaning, cooking etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity MeditateWhat would you like to invest more time in reflecting on?
Rebecca Merrick 10/05/2018 12:30 PMIt's always a good idea to take a step back and reflect on where you are, where you want to be, and appreciating everything that has happened to shape your life thus far. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Choose Organic IngredientsCan organic farming feed the world? Which side of the argument do you fall on? Why?
Rebecca Merrick 10/05/2018 12:29 PMOrganic farming can certainly feed the world. There needs to be an industry shift and more investments to keep growing organic farming to a larger scale. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! In what other ways can you exercise your civic duty to protect the environment and reduce carbon emissions?
Rebecca Merrick 10/05/2018 12:27 PMAn easy way to help protect the environment is investing in reusable bags and refusing to take any plastic ones while out shopping - Keep some reusable bags both at home and in your car to minimize your chances of forgetting to grab one.
