Melissa's actions
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 24 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Nature
Enjoy the Sunrise/Sunset
I will enjoy the sunrise and/or sunset each day.
Nature
Spend Time Outside
I will replace 30 minute(s) each day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Health
Learn About Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 30 minutes researching environmental justice concerns in my region, their causes, and local initiatives to address these concerns.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 3 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Food
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those who produce my food in other regions of the world to make better choices when I shop.
Participant Feed

Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

Melissa Mills 10/08/2018 4:20 AMI prefer to ride my bicycle to the grocery store. That is, I love riding my bike, and I don't like driving... perhaps through association with the huge use of fossil fuels involved. In any case, the cashier at the grocery store is amused as I pile avocados, tomatoes, cans of dog food and heads of lettuce into my backpack. "Would you like a bag?" he asks. "No, we need to stop poisoning the planet," I reply. The man behind me in line stands listening. It doesn't make sense to them yet. They don't yet understand. I'm cheerful and confident. After awhile, they will hear this often enough, and it will begin to sink in. We are going to make the shift. One day at a time. -
Melissa Mills 10/05/2018 5:22 AMIt's fun and inspiring to read other peoples' reflections. Also, it gives me ideas of challenges I want to add. I'm not at my maximum yet!

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Learn About Local Environmental Justice ConcernsWho is most affected by environmental degration and/or environmental irresponsiblity in your community? How are they affected?
Melissa Mills 10/04/2018 7:23 AMYesterday I got to meet with ESRAG member and Rotary International Staff Green Committee founder Lauren Marquez-Viso. I learned that she is also Vice President of a group appointed by the Mayor of Evanston, Illinois. The group is finalizing the "Citizens Greener Evanston" plan! It has been out for public comment for the past month or so. Bravo, Lauren! -
Melissa Mills 10/03/2018 7:08 AMOh my goodness! It's already October 3rd! I meant to have more challenges. I wonder if it's too late to add more! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?
Melissa Mills 9/20/2018 2:08 PMI tried doing this last year. It was amazingly difficult. One thing I have been doing is reusing the plastic disposable vegetable bags that I already have. I have quite a store of them. Since the challenge finished, I have kept trying. I have found that when I really try, I find alternatives.
What solutions have you found?
-
Madison Lan 9/20/2018 3:07 PMI always have a reusable bag in my handbag. They are quite common now and can fit easily. Also when i go to the market, i bring my own bags and ask the vegetable sellers not to use aby plastic bags: 1. It costs them rs 0.50 and also people won’t be using these again! I just put my veggies directly in my bags. Ofc i start by buying heavier/strongers vegetables ex potatoes etc so that the soft ones don’t get crushed (tomatoes etc).

Melissa Mills 9/06/2018 10:37 AMI am enjoying looking at the challenges. The issue is, until I try to do them, I don't know how hard they will be! The proof is in the doing.-
Neisha Sultanti 9/07/2018 9:26 AMThanks for sharing this page with us Melissa. I am loving it and exploring all the actions. I hope I am able to do the ones I have challenged myself.
