Erin's actions
Waste
Go Paperless
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by opting into paperless billing and ending unwanted subscriptions.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Community
Volunteer in my Community
I will volunteer 5 hour(s) in my community during the challenge.
Simplicity
Eat Mindfully
I will eat all of my meals without distractions, e.g., phone, computer, TV, or newspaper.
Energy
Adjust the Thermostat
I will adjust my thermostat down 2 degrees from usual when I use the heat, and up 2 degrees when I use air conditioning.
Nature
Join An Outdoor Project
I will join an outdoor restoration project in my community.
Nature
Go for a Daily Walk
I will take a 20-minute walk outside each day.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Go PaperlessReducing your paper mail can be such a freeing action to take -- by reducing what is coming in, you can reduce what is going into the recycling bin too. How does it make you feel? What is the next step you will take to reduce your waste?
Erin Mitchell 10/24/2018 8:15 PMReducing my paper mail also makes me feel more secure about my identity protection - identity theft is huge right now and seemingly harder to avoid. Less items with my name and address on it is great for the environment and myself! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWater Say No to Plastic StrawsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Erin Mitchell 10/24/2018 8:13 PMI already try to limit single-use items but am curious about trying fabric napkins over paper napkins - something we already do at Waterleaf in the women's restroom and paper hand towels. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Eat MindfullyMindful eating is healthier for us than eating with distractions. How do your eating experiences differ when practicing mindfulness?
Erin Mitchell 10/24/2018 8:11 PMI've taken a moment to relax and really focus on what I am eating - rather than rushing through my meal and onto the next task. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergy Adjust the ThermostatYour utility company is able to tell you your average energy usage. Ask them how your energy usage compares to others in your zipcode, and in your state. What other steps can you take each day to reduce your electricity usage?
Erin Mitchell 10/24/2018 8:10 PMWear extra layers, make sure to adjust thermostat for hours not home, when cold get moving for a few moments to warm up- maybe between commercials while watching tv, etc. In the summer use fans rather than AC, open up the windows during evenings and cooler mornings. -
Erin Mitchell 10/24/2018 2:20 PMNice work team Waterleaf! I was with you in spirit :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Go for a Daily WalkHow do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?
Erin Mitchell 10/08/2018 4:59 PMWhen walking the dog in our neighborhood, we always see something new that we don't notice when just driving by - a new fence project by a neighbor, seasonal landscaping changes, a new house for sale, etc. We also often get the chance to meet new neighbors, which is always fun too. -
Erin Mitchell 10/04/2018 10:55 AMGood luck this year Waterleaf team!
