Terry's actions
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.
Waste
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, at work, or on campus.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Health
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend at least 60 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or some other small improvement.
Community
Talk To My Friends and Colleagues
I will research the social or environmental issues in my community that matter to me and tell 6 friends and/or colleagues each day about what I learn.
Community
Join my Neighborhood Association
I will join my neighborhood association or another local group.
Water
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of plants and trees at my home or work.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 60 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of C02 over the course of the next year.
Simplicity
Support a Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Waste
Find Local Recycling Depots
I will spend at least 45 minutes finding out where to recycle the recyclable items that I can't put in my curbside bin.
Food
Meet My Local Farmers
I will visit my nearest farm to find out who produces my food, and will learn about the quality of life of those who produce my food in other regions of the world to make better choices when I shop.
Simplicity
Track my Purchases
I will spend 20 minutes each day maintaining a record of all my purchases and learning about my spending habits.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhere are your nearest natural bodies of water? How might they be affected by runoff?
Terry Mott 10/24/2018 8:51 PMMy backyard pond runs into a local body of water and is affected by any runoff from my yard. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Terry Mott 10/24/2018 8:49 PMWhat concerns me the most about how we are affecting the planet is the daily damage in myriad ways that the average person contributes to the overall health of the planet be it waste, over consumption of goods, etc. The apathy of the average individual is what concerns me most. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Terry Mott 10/24/2018 8:47 PMPollinators are critical to our food supply and they are dying at a rapid rate. Educating the general population re this matter is critical to our global survival. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportationHow can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?
Terry Mott 10/24/2018 8:45 PMI'm advocating for people to use bike paths in my community. It's a healthy activity and saves the planet! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhen you know who produces your food, you are connecting personally to your complex regional food system. What are the advantages of knowing who produces your food and where it comes from? Do you think this might enable someone to advocate for a better quality of life for those who produce their food, both near and far?
Terry Mott 10/24/2018 8:43 PMKnowing who produces your food will ensure its quality, and this will advocate for a better quality of life for those who produce it, especially for those in distant lands because we will learn the challenges they face. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONEnergyWhat do you plan to do with the money you save from making more energy efficient choices?

Terry Mott 10/19/2018 9:23 PMEco-Challenge: Research a social or environmental issue that matters to me and tell my friends about it.It's sad that the current US administration is opening up our national parks (now Yellowstone) to hunting, a trend that is also happening in our state parks. Surely this is yet another activity that our grandchildren will add to their what-were-you-thinking letter to us.

Terry Mott 10/19/2018 9:20 PMEco-Challenge: Support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors:Sometimes the universe steps in and provides an interesting twist to one's path. On 10/16/2018, I inadvertently joined another Eco-Challenge team called Slow Food (I was tired and I thought I was signing up for an entirely new eco-challenge called "Slow Food"). My post that day was about the amazing Sao Paulo Lab's new creation: Agro-Gym.And here's the twist: But for that mistake, I would not have gotten the wonderful message below from Marianne Greco (the Slow Food's team leader), which included a better diagram than the one I had re the Agro-Gym; the info re Agro-Gym would not have been spread to many people I don't know (who ironically are engaged in related activities re the program); and I would not have learned about an amazing international nonprofit (Slow Food USA) that has a chapter in my area (see https://www.slowfoodusa.org/about-us ).I sent Marianne a "thank you" for her message below before this supposed mistake was corrected and I was removed from her team and reunited with team Recycle Brevard: -
Terry Mott 10/16/2018 8:57 PMEco-Challenge: Research a social or environmental issue that matters to me and tell my friends about it. An October 15, 2018 article in the Orlando Sentinel stated that Harris Corporation was planning to merge with L3 Technologies next year (if the plan was approved by Department of Defense), and the merger will create a $33.5 billion military technology company based in Brevard County, Florida. The new name will be L3 Harris Technologies. All sounded great to me--a real economic boost for this coastal community--until I read that one of the products L3 Technologies produces is undersea drones. I realize we can't fight progress, so let me just vent for a moment while I reminisce of days gone by when we put far less "stuff" in our oceans, and left the waters to the majestic creatures that call it home.
