Catelynn's actions
Simplicity
Have a Garage Sale
I will have a group garage sale with friends, family, and/or neighbors.
Water
Say No to Plastic Straws
An estimated 71% of seabirds and 30% of turtles have been found with plastics in their stomachs. When they ingest plastic, marine life has a 50% mortality rate. By asking for no straw when placing a drink order, I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) of out of the ocean each day.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Waste
Skip the Straw
Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Food
Weekly Meal Planning
I will reduce food waste and save money by planning a weekly menu, only buying the ingredients I need.
Community
Host a House Party
I will host a house party with 10 friends and/or colleagues to watch a movie or present a guest speaker on an environmental issue that matters to me.
Transportation
Work from Home
I will work from home 1 day(s) to avoid my commute's carbon output.
Energy
Switch to Cold Water
I will switch to washing my clothes in cold water, saving up to 1,600 lbs of C02 over the course of the next year.
Health
Support Pollution Reduction
I will spend at least 90 minutes learning about water and air quality issues in my area, how they are impacting human and environmental health, and how I can help.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?
Catelynn Neville 10/08/2018 8:35 AMThis does not surprise me because of my prior food waste knowledge. I would rather use this money to pay rent. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Catelynn Neville 10/08/2018 8:13 AMI regularly use straws. I am substituting nothing because I have started asking for no straws. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?
Catelynn Neville 10/08/2018 8:12 AMI have carried things in my purse and cart. I have tried to start bringing a reusable bag
