  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Whole Foods Diet
Michael Pollan states that "it is better to pay the grocer (our edit: or the farmer!) than the doctor." What are your thoughts on this?

I think that the statement is mostly just reflecting on how we have to fuel our bodies with nutritious food to stay healthy and to perform at optimum levels (but going to the doctor is also important)!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?

Our society is very commercial and fast food focused. I think if people were more connected to where their food comes from, and learn more about the importance of vegetables it might shift as a culture.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Try a New Way to Prep
Canning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?

Definitely love making half sour pickles!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Weekly Meal Planning
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Does this surprise you? Where would you rather use this money?

A good way to keep this number down is to buy in smaller quantities. That can be difficult for a family if busy, but buying fresh fruit and vegetables in lower quantities and making grocery shopping a fun activity can help!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Zero-Waste Cooking
In North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?

Making stock from any leftover veggie bits and tips is a great and rewarding way to eat the whole vegetable. I personally like making stock for ramen with the leftovers!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Nature Go for a Daily Walk
How do you experience your neighborhood or city differently when walking instead of driving?

When walking instead of driving, you definitely feel a stronger connection with your community and nature around you. You tend to pay attention to smaller details you may not have noticed by taking a car. Walking is a great way to unwind as well, and avoid the frustration that can sometimes be associated with driving.
