Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

I have found each practice associated a challenge to provide me with the opportunity to step back from my busy day and reflect on what I can improve. These small daily respites have been a big part of why I love the October Ecochallenge.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

The biggest thing is convenience. The best way to stop accepting disposable mugs is to constantly carry around your reusable mug and this can be cumbersome. I still try to bring it where ever I go and this makes me feel better about myself for reducing my carbon footprint.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Skip the Straw
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?

The biggest thing I can do is reduce by refusing to purchase products that I do not need. I also can share products (like renting someones car with Get Around) instead of buying my own. What I need to do better is learning how to repair the things I already own.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?

When I forget my reusable bag, I may try to carry the items in my hand or ask for a paper bag that I can recycle or use to line my compost bin. I have more successfully created the habit of bringing a reusable bag by buying a bag that folds up into a keychain pouch that I can bring everywhere.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

I can do this by educating family and friends on the importance of using reusable bags, buying in bulk and purchasing foods that are sold without packaging. What concerns me most is how people act with no regard to the consequences of their actions. This is largely caused by businesses pricing products at prices that fail to reflect the true cost to the environment from that products production, use, and disposal.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health More Fruits and Veggies
What do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How can we start shifting from a meat-focused food culture to a more plant-based one?

Americans eat a ton of meat and are told that the ideal dinner plate has protein (often depicted as a picture of meat). Meat is made to be cheap and accessible through fast food restaurants. We can start shifting from this meat-focused culture by educating people that animal agriculture is the second biggest contributor to CO2 emissions in the US. People need to understand the ecological impact they contribute to by voting for meat production by buying cow, pig, and poultry products.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Waste Use a Reusable Water Bottle
While water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?

The biggest barrier to this new habit is forgetfulness. The best thing I can do to make this a more permanent success is have a list of things to leave the house with each day. This can include phone, keys, wallet, reusable bottle, reusable straw, reusable napkin, etc.
