Plastic bags and small plastic pieces like straws are most likely to get swept into our waterways. I will keep 3 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill and ocean each day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Food
Advocate for More Food Options
I will advocate for local and/or organic food options at work or on campus.
Waste
Use Reusable Bags
I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases.
Food
Reduce Animal Products
I will enjoy 2 meatless meal(s) and/or 2 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Nature
Tend a Garden
I will tend to a garden each day, or work on starting one.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 30 minute(s) each day.
Food
Watch a Documentary about Food Sovereignty
I will watch 2 documentary(ies) about food sovereignty: the right of local peoples to control their own food systems including markets, ecological resources, food cultures and production methods.
Health
Learn More about Food Deserts
I will spend 30 minutes learning about food deserts and find out how I can advocate for healthy and fresh food in my region.

Edelina Panych 10/24/2018 8:22 AMI love this challenge. It makes me think outside the box and be curious of how I can simplify, detoxify, and improve my life and health. It is hard at first to implement changes, but being aware and making conscious choices makes me proud of myself and my accomplishments. I will continue many of daily challenges as I feel better and lighter. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Edelina Panych 10/24/2018 8:12 AMNature grounds us, it reduces our stress, it elevates our mood. Spending time outside in the nature is good for our well being and our health. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureHave you ever had a significant experience in nature that altered your perspective or focus? If so, please describe it.
Edelina Panych 10/23/2018 11:23 AMI try to connect to nature every day. My house is surrounded by trees and wild animals. In addition, I have cats, dog, and goats. Just watching animals, both wild and domestic, brings calmness. By gardening, I learned that if I take care of my plants, they thrive, if one or two days I skip, my plants are not the same anymore. It requires patience and consistency. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteHow could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle?
Edelina Panych 10/22/2018 8:49 AMInstead of paper towels, I now use kitchen towels.
I buy only bio-gradable household products now.
I make my own glass cleaner by combining water, vinegar, and couple of drops of good quality citrus essential oils. Easy, no chemicals, and smells good.
I reduced my make up usage. I only do full make up once or twice a week now. Other days I allow my skin to breathe.
I repurpose and reuse glass bottles or containers.

REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Edelina Panych 10/22/2018 8:39 AMThe abundance of meat is contributing to eating more of it. In North America, there is abundance of food and convenience of getting food, like fast food restaurants. North America also has bigger stores like Costo and Sam's Club, where you can food in bulk. Restaurants in USA have bigger portions than for example in Europe. And people tent to eat mindlessly and miss out on the fullness signals that our body is giving us. In North America, people tent to eat until they are over ate.
I think to start shifting meat focused food culture, we need to start with reducing the size of portions in the restaurants and doctors/ dieticians discussing food eating habits with their patients at each visit. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWasteWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?
Edelina Panych 10/16/2018 8:39 AMI carry things out in my hands when I don't have a reusable bag with me. If I have many items, then I place them in a cart and take it to my car. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodGiven the impact of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers on both the natural world and our food systems, what do you think about the use of these products in agriculture?
Edelina Panych 10/10/2018 8:03 AMPesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers do affect our health and longevity. There are studies done showing that these products affect fertility, both male and female, make us more susceptible to diseases, lower our immune system. People with constant exposure to those products develop chronic pain, chronic fatigue, and autoimmune diseases. Our nation is getting sicker and sicker. I personally when switched to organic, locally or home grown without pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers products, started to feel better physically and mentally. I no longer experience fatigue, brain fog, lack of energy. I does cost more to buy "clean" products, but its worth to pay a little more right now, than to spend a lot more money in treatments in 10-20 + years. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealthHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
