Just got back from a trip and am planning to offset my carbon output by planting trees. I even brought home a plastic bottle I had to buy and will reuse, then recycle it.

    Waste Compost Food Waste
New to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? Do you know how your compost will be used and the benefits it has on the environment?

I am surprised by the size of the bag of matter that I take down to the compost bin. Makes the other garbage pail smaller!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use a Reusable Mug
Maybe you've heard how good it is to switch from a single use coffee cup to a reuseable one but it's just hard to make the switch. Think about what stands in your way of making this a habit. By identifying the challenges, you can begin to work through them to have better success in taking this action. Knowing the difference you are making, how does it make you feel?

Make sure your coffee machine at work will "recognize" reusable mugs when you buy coffee from it!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transportation Choose a Carbon Offset
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2—per person. That’s a lot of carbon! What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

I travel for business - so am trying to develop remote follow-up processes to avoid making second trips for certain projects.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Recycle Everything I Can
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

This morning I made my weekly trip to the compost bin in the apartment's garden - I love adding my compost and stirring the pile a bit to see how it is doing!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Waste Use Reusable Bags
What do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?

I have carried things in my hands to avoid buying a plastic bag (here we pay for plastic bags). I also have a cloth bag in my computer pouch. Finally, any plastic bags that do make it into my home are turned into garbage bags.
