Alana Randol 10/24/2018 10:33 AMI won't try to go meatless/vegan - we use less meat but we certainly don't go three meals a day without meat. It's easy to skip meat one night a week for family supper - that's been one of our goals for a long time - but all three meals when my daughter takes lunch and we eat leftovers from the night before for lunch, etc proved to be too much for daily goal. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Watch a Documentary about Food SovereigntyHow does food sovereignty address the complex agrarian transition to modern food systems?
Alana Randol 10/24/2018 10:31 AMI watched a few on netflix, but the one documentary that really disturbed me the most was "Food Inc" which talks about how the nature of farming has changed to a heartless factory model - and how laws and regulations actually make it so hard to grow and sell milk, eggs, fresh chicken, etc for small farmers. It's literally 100% illegal to let other people drink your cow milk in Canada, and not sure about the U.S. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONSimplicity Go for a Daily WalkFresh air and movement are good for our entire being and can help us think more clearly and creatively. How does taking a walk each day affect yourself and/or your work?
Alana Randol 10/24/2018 10:30 AMThis is easy since I live on a farm. I take my chickens for a walk and go visit my alpacas for breakfast and supper. I am also in a continual self-challenge to use my Fitbit to get at least 10,000 steps a day, so that is often more than 30 minutes of walking each day. It feels so great to be outside. When I lived in the city I sometimes didn't go outside except to go to the car, for days on end. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use Reusable BagsWhat do you do if you find yourself in the situation of needing a bag for items but don't have a reuseable one with you? Carry things out in your hands? In a cart? Accept a disposable one? If you find yourself in this position often, what system could you put in place to try to establish this a successful habit?
Alana Randol 10/24/2018 10:28 AMI now put the bags right back at the door after I empty them, so then the next time I go out I have to take them off the doorknob and get them back into my car. My biggest downfall is thinking I only am picking up "a couple things" so I take one bag in, and then I buy a lot and don't want to go back to the car for the other bags. I'll work on that.-
Melanie Lulue 10/24/2018 10:38 AMI'm with you on buying more than originally planned to purchase, but I love challenging the bagger to get everything in the reusable bags I bring in (I almost always bring in at least 2). They are very talented people!

REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsWhat do you think contributes to people in North America eating more meat than in other places, and what does this say about North American values and ways of living? How do we start shifting a meat-focused food culture?
Alana Randol 10/17/2018 12:20 PMThe typical meat, potatoes, veggie mindset permeates Canada/US european - more options even at fast food places that encourage meatless - might help. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Use a Reusable Water BottleWhile water bottles serve an important role in places for health and safety, we can do more to reduce the unnecessary use of them. Can you identify the barriers in making this a new habit? How can you set yourself up for success in making this a permanent change?
Alana Randol 10/17/2018 11:58 AMMost public venues require you to buy water bottles as part of their profit motive. We were at the San Diego Zoo and they happily refill your refillable water bottle with cold water and ice at the concession stand - but most places don't even provide a water fountain. Perhaps water fountains/bottle filling stations could be made state law at public facilities?-
Melanie Lulue 10/24/2018 10:39 AMGreat idea for public facilities!

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Compost Food WasteNew to composting? Be sure to check out the action resource links to learn tips and more about it. As you transition from throwing food away to composting, what do you notice about how much you are tossing? Do you know how your compost will be used and the benefits it has on the environment?
Alana Randol 10/15/2018 9:15 AMI looked into it, and the chickens can eat a lot of our compost, so they are loving it and it's reduced most of our food scraps waste easily. We have a manure/food compost outside now as well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Try a New Way to PrepCanning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?
Alana Randol 10/15/2018 9:14 AMI have learned to pickle eggs - we have 12 chickens and weren't eating all the eggs they provide, so now I've pickled eggs and they are delicious! Gave some to my family too!
