Lisa's actions
Health
Take Control
Both system and personal sustainability are important! I will develop a plan with my medical professionals to achieve my best health and live my life to the fullest.
Health
Exercise Daily
Exercise is a great stress blaster! I will exercise for 30 minute(s) each day.
Water
Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
I will prevent water runoff and increase absorbency by mulching the base of plants and trees at my home or work.
Health
Happiness
I will write down three things every day that I am grateful for, or send one email every day thanking or praising someone.
Water
Collect Rain Water
I will create a rain garden or bioswale, or use rain barrels to collect water for outdoor watering needs.
Water
5-Minute Showers
I will save up to 20 gallons (75 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers.
Health
Go get a check up
I will make an appointment for my annual physical.
Water
Eco-friendly Gardening
I will plant native species, landscape with water-efficient plants, and use eco-friendly fertilizers.
Health
Know My health
I will get my Core Four Biometrics tests (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and BMI).
Simplicity
Less Screen Time
I will replace 120 minute(s) of screen time each day with other activities.
Simplicity
Meditate
I will meditate or create a moment of silence for 30 minute(s) each day to reflect on things important to me.
Water
Fix Leaky Faucets
I will fix faucets or report leaky faucets to facilities that have been wasting up to 9 gallons (34 L) of water per faucet every day.
Nature
Explore My Area
I will explore at least one new hiking trail or nature walk in my area.
Nature
Support Local Pollinators
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 60 minutes researching which plants support local native pollinators and plant some in my yard.
Nature
Forage for My Food
I will use the 'Learn More' resources below to find where I can forage for my own food locally.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureAmongst the motivations for foraging are: a source of food; means of income; connecting with nature; cultural tradition; or transmitting "local ecological knowledge, and a means for stewarding local and native plant populations" (McLain et al. 2012, 13). Which of these would be your chief motivation and why?
Lisa Recklies 10/09/2018 5:46 AMI want to learn what is provided by nature naturally around us and which of these can be a part of my food source. Each region is different and through learning this it gives you an appreciation for the landscape around you and an appreciation for the workings of nature. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureWhy is it important to take care of pollinators?
Lisa Recklies 10/09/2018 5:44 AMPollinators are an important part of the chain that provides the food we eat. They essentially provide the fruit and the gains that we take for granted.-
Joanna Schaefer 10/11/2018 9:58 AMNice! I have a lot of what you've listed here in my yard, too. But the biggest draw for the bees at my house is the catnip! (It draws the neighbor cats, too! Ha!) -
Lisa Recklies 10/11/2018 6:35 AMI have introduce Alyssum, Sage, Lavendar, Iris, Geranium, Gladiolus, Dahlia, Rosemary, Poppy, Thyme and Strawberries in amongst the roses I had already planted. I also made sure the plants had not been treated with an insecticide that had proven to be harmful to bees and use natural means, When possible, to discourage nuisance bugs and diseases. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONNatureHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place?
Lisa Recklies 10/09/2018 5:42 AMVenturing outside refreshes your soul. It allows you to breathe and to see and to appreciate the world outside the safety of your four walls. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterFixing leaky faucets is one of the tasks that we can easily put off until later. Good job on completing this action! How will you use the momentum from completing this action to increase your water efficiency?
Lisa Recklies 10/09/2018 5:40 AMLeaky faucets is just the beginning of how we can use and/or waste less water in our daily lives. We are going to begin researching dual flush toilets to replace those already in the house. This will decrease our water usage substantially. -
Lisa Recklies 10/09/2018 5:33 AMIt feels good being mindful of our impact on resources and nature. -
Lisa Recklies 10/03/2018 7:42 AMI started as soon as I registered and am excited to start logging my progress and my challenges. -
Lisa Recklies 9/27/2018 6:52 AMWhat starts out as a conscious effort fast becomes a habit. -
Lisa Recklies 9/26/2018 9:06 AMParticipating in this challenge opens up choices and education in possible choices that will enable you to live in harmony to the land and resources that support us. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhat are the most prominent water concerns in your area? Examples include drought, flooding, pollution, access, security, and privatization.
Lisa Recklies 9/26/2018 9:04 AMPollution and drought are my two primary concerns. I originally come from a region in Australia where drought is a very real threat. Lifestyles have been adjusted because of this - 4 minute showers, reusing water in washing cycles, toilets are dual flush, zero landscaping and all homes have an operating rainwater tanks that catches water from the gutters. Many of these measures I would love to see introduced over here. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaterWhere are your nearest natural bodies of water? How might they be affected by runoff?
Lisa Recklies 9/26/2018 9:01 AM
The nearest body of water is the river that runs through the heart of the town. Its levels rise and fall dependent on the rainfall and snowmelt of each season - however it can also be unduly affected by chemicals leaching into its water supply which can then change the whole dynamics of the organisms that live within the system or that use the system to support their survival.
