Launch a Recycling Program
I will start a recycling program at my workplace or school. If a recycling program exists, I will advocate for ways to improve and expand it.

I will commute by bike 28 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to 14.12 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.

Zero-Waste Cooking
I will cook 3 meal(s) with zero-waste each day

Nature
Join An Outdoor Project
I will join an outdoor restoration project in my community.
Food
Buy From a Farmers Market
I will purchase produce and meat from a local farmers market or food co-op.
Energy
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Food
Try a New Way to Prep
I will try a new method of food preparation, such as canning, pickling, or baking bread.
Food
Plant an Herb Garden
I will plant an herb garden in my home, workplace, or dorm room.

REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Launch a Recycling ProgramHow might thinking creatively help us address big systems problems differently?
Jennifer Reece 10/24/2018 11:04 AMI advocated to get composting at my workplace, even though my employer doesn't own the building. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWaste Reduce Single-Use DisposablesBringing your own bags and containers to the grocery store, and even to restaurants for leftovers, are a couple of ways to reduce your waste. What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Jennifer Reece 10/24/2018 11:03 AMI already bring my own cups, grocery bags, and to-go containers, so my challenge had to do with buying food or other items at the store. I tried to buy food in bulk, or only in plastic that can by recycled. It's difficult to do this, so advocating for more sustainable packaging is a goal of mine. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Go by BikeHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Jennifer Reece 10/24/2018 11:01 AMI've been riding my bike to work 1-2 times per week since summer started and feel more connected to my community and nature because of it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONNature Join An Outdoor ProjectHow well do you know the area you live in? Is a deep knowledge of your surroundings -- known as a 'sense of place' -- important to you? If so, why?
Jennifer Reece 10/24/2018 11:00 AMI love the Pacific Northwest forests and going hiking or doing volunteer projects to keep them healthy! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Exercise DailyHow can you incorporate other personal values (like quality time with friends or spending time in nature) into your exercise routine?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth Know My healthHow do you deal with the physical and emotional stress of the big problems we face? How can you help others cope?
Jennifer Reece 10/24/2018 10:59 AMI deal with stress by riding my bike, taking a walk, or talking things through with friends. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Plant an Herb GardenConsider the ways you can garden: a plot of land? a patio container? hanging basket? windowsill gardens? What would work best for your living situation and lifestyle?
Jennifer Reece 10/24/2018 10:58 AMGrowing food in our garden is a goal, but our soil is not great. I've been working to amend the soil so vegetables will grow well. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Try a New Way to PrepCanning and pickling food is a great way to have delicious summer fruits and vegetables all year round. Just make sure to follow the canning and pickling guidelines from the USDA. What are some foods that you would like to preserve and enjoy later in the year?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Buy From a Farmers MarketWhat is one food choice that you make, or could make, that would do more good and less harm?
Jennifer Reece 10/24/2018 10:56 AMBuy locally, from farmers with organic practices as much as possible. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Zero-Waste CookingIn North America, up to 65% of food waste happens at the consumer level. Chef Steven Satterfield advocates for utilizing every part of a vegetable. How can you incorporate using an entire vegetable, including the skins, tops, and stalks during your next meal prep?
