James's actions
Water
Install a Low-Flow Showerhead
I will save up to 15 gallons (56 L) of water a day by installing a low-flow showerhead.
Nature
Forage for My Food
I will use the 'Learn More' resources below to find where I can forage for my own food locally.
Waste
Carry my Trash
I will carry all of my unrecyclable, non-compostable trash with me to raise my awareness of how much I send to the landfill.
Waste
Compost Food Waste
I will avoid sending up to .69 lbs (.31 kg) of food waste to the landfill each day by composting my food or learning how to.
Energy
Turn it off
I will keep lights, electronics, and appliances turned off when not using them.
Transportation
Advocate for Greener Vehicles
I will spend at least 30 minutes assessing the vehicles used by my company or college and advocate for a purchasing policy focused on fuel-efficient vehicles.
Water
Ditch the Lawn
I will replace my lawn with a drought-tolerant landscape and save the water, money, and time I used to spend cutting the grass.
Transportation
Improve a Bus Stop
I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or some other small improvement.
Community
Host a House Party
I will host a house party with 7 friends and/or colleagues to watch a movie or present a guest speaker on an environmental issue that matters to me.
Energy
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Energy
Install Alternative Energy
I will install alternative energy systems, such as solar electric systems or solar water heaters.
Energy
Upgrade My Windows
I will upgrade the windows or weatherstripping in my home or office to reduce air leaks and save on energy costs.
Transportation
Choose a Carbon Offset
If buying a plane ticket, I will also buy a carbon offset.
Transportation
Go by Bike
I will commute by bike 28 mile(s) each day and avoid sending up to 25.05 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Waste
Reduce Single-Use Disposables
Historically, marginalized and low-income communities live closer to landfills, contributing to a multitude of health problems. I will find out how I can limit single-use items and do my best to limit the waste I generate.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

James Riddle 10/24/2018 4:18 PMAnother fun EcoChallenge in the books. My favorite parts:
- Waking up this morning to the bread that my partner made last night ("Try method of food prep")
- Lerning that my company (HP committed to having 100% of its vehicles be EVs by 2040 (We took the EV100 pledge!) and getting a first rate response when I read up on and inquired about EV charging availability for workers at my site in Vancouver (apparently there's working on it and will put more information on our intranet to help others like me be well-informed about the plans)
- Taking my daughter to the bus stop by her school to pick up litter and put up a 'thank you' sign for riders that we made -- She's like me: picking up litter can be a fun game if you take the time to do it.
- Carrying my trash around and being pleasantly surprised that I really don't generate much.
- Learning about a group-sourced map of up-for-grabs fruit trees all over my city.
Cheers! -
James Riddle 10/23/2018 11:18 AMJust finished my last one-time challenge. Planning to host an enviro movie viewing at work before the holidays. Maybe this one about fast fashion's effect on the environment (https://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree/article/5a1a43b5-cbae-4a42-8271-48f53b63bd07). Should present some parallels to my companies products and provoke discussion about how our jobs can contribute to our company's efforts to develop a circular economy. (And also some discussion about Xmas shopping!) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Host a House PartyHow does environmental quality influence your sense of community?
James Riddle 10/23/2018 11:14 AMIn the Pacific Northwest we spend a lot of time outdoors and a signifant amount of time in urban and rural wild spaces. This develops a shared sense of community which would be possible were those wild spaces to be degraded. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Advocate for Greener VehiclesReducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?
James Riddle 10/23/2018 10:53 AMA clear and increasingly urgent driver is GHG emissions and climate change. The most recent UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) shows that stakes are ever-increasing and that if we (all of us) don't take action very soon, the worst effects of climate change will be unavoidable. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportation Improve a Bus StopHow can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?
James Riddle 10/21/2018 8:37 PMMaybe a better question to answer is how to advocate for developing communities so that make it easy to live and work while taking effective and efficient mass transit. -
James Riddle 10/21/2018 8:33 PMRoad bikes to the see the Portland Timbers route Real Salt Lake today :) -
James Riddle 10/20/2018 10:34 AMTaking a scenice ride on an historic train today. Had to drive a bit to get there, but our daughter is learning some history, seeing the seasons change in the trees and fields, and getting some quality family time. -
James Riddle 10/19/2018 3:59 PMField trip today to a farm with my daughter. Picked apples from the tree, saw chickens laying eggs, picked a pumpkin, fedd apple core to the pigs, explained why the were no ripe blueberries this time :) -
